Looking into building my wife a gun. I've got a donor gun already chambered in 243. Any advantages or disadvantages to one particular caliber? I'll be reloading. My original plan was just to go back with the 243 but I'm not sure now. Lol

I'd probably just stick with the 243 win. I've been shooting a BR and (2) 243AI's that are set up to shoot VLD's. The BR is super accurate and will push a 105gr. Amax to about 2900 fps safely (28-30" barrel). The standard 243 win. is good for 3000-3100 fps the AI is good for 3200-3300fps. They are all very close. If you reload then it my be a toss up. But if you ever forget your ammo you'll be wishig you had a 243 win or the AI. The AI's shoot just as accurate with fireforming loads.

The BR is not a great repeater and feeds a bit choppy from a internal magazine. It can be done but requires blocking the rear of the magazine sort of like the .223 has. The 243 and 243AI will both feed better than the BR with no modifications. There is also the SLR and 6CM both have a strong following. The main down side to the AI is it requires fireforming brass which means even shorter barrel life before you can get the full velocity benefit. Not a big deal for deer hunting where 20 pcs of formed brass will do, but to make several hundred pcs of brass to take on a prairie dog hunt is a major under taking using valuable life of the barrel. The BR is the most consistent catridge I have ever shot but it does lack a bit of power. The BR is such an excellent accurate rig we hardly take anything else to shoot PD's any more but these are full blown single shot bench guns weighing around 20lbs. The 100gr. Sierra Game Kings shoot light out for me and perform very well on deer. The 6XC not so much. Buddy chambered up one and quickly rechambered to 6mm-284. The XC is nothing but trouble in my experience.Last edited by LWolken; 07-30-2014, 08:40 PM.

Don't rule out the 6xc.
saw it earlier but was driving home from Shreveport , just walked in the door
the BR and Dasher own numerous world records b/c the cartridge is so inherently accurate
everything I shoot is single shot , either solid bottom action or follower
if the OP wants stupid accuracy at 600+ yds, build a 10 - 12 lb. Dasher and let it roll
if he wants a repeater, then 243
