Need advice on stock for custom rifle

Back about 5 years ago I had my sons Remington 721 in .270 Win. worked over a little bit by Mike Bryant. He trued the action and fitted a SS Hart barrel on it. I kept the rifle in a sporter configuration, 24" barrel with a med contour. (can't remember the number offhand, will have to look it up when I get home). It shoots pretty dang good.

At the time I didn't have money for a real stock, so I just turned pillars myself and pillar bedded it into the original crappy wood stock with crappy bottom metal. Now it is time to upgrade and fix all that.

I need some advice on stock/bottom metal options. I want to stay with a medium weight sporter/hunting rifle style overall. I would like to go to a bottom metal with a detachable magazine, but not something that hangs way down. 3-4 rounds would be good. I have no idea where to look for that, and what fits what. As far as the stock B&C would be my bottom end. Probably a Manners, maybe a McMillian. Barrel and action are going to get cerakoted, probably in Sniper Grey. The scope on it is a Vortex Viper 4x12 w/BDC. I'm probably going to get a bolt knob upgrade too.

So start throwing me some options out there, post up some pics for me to look at. Include model numbers on the stocks and what have you.

CB- hook a brother up and help me get this figured out. You know me, my checkbook isn't fat, but I will spend what I need to for it to be right.

pretty sure the M700 and M721 have the same screw hole spacing ... should be right at 7 3/8" for the long action

you will need to call various stock makers and see if they inlet for the M721. The 700 and 721 are close with minor changes in the tang size and trigger safety cutout. A GS can mill or glass bed the areas needing attention

A Manners or McM stock will cost you $500+ , then the added expense if the GS has to do any other modifications. McM delivery time from 6-9 months ; Manners between 5-6 months. A used HS Precision stock can be picked up for $200

Since you want a detach magazine box floorplate, you need to call Dave Kiff at PTG and see if his Stealth DM hardware will fit a M721 action. Pretty sure it will but I'm not 100% sure. Slight stock modifications may also need to be done to make a DM system work

PTG detach magazine bottom metal is priced from $99 to $129. At least that's what I paid for my M700 action hardware. AI magazines run $75

If you go the ADL route, you'll be saving close to $200 and whatever costs accrue for the custom fitting of hardware.

      Manners - http://mannersstocks.com/

      regarding your barrel contour, sounds like a #3 , maybe a #4

IMO on this rifle i would save the money and go with a HS have it bedded and get a good DM.

McM manners etc are all worth the money. But idk that i would spend that kind of money on that rifle when i think that a HS precision would do all that you needed.

But thats just me. Im a big HS fan i think their great stocks for the money.

Interesting take on things there guys. I may be second guessing myself on the detachable magazine bottom metal. In the end, I think BDL style bottom metal would be just fine on this rifle.

Thinking about this stock, my son likes laying out in a wheat field waiting for the deer he wants. He does lots of prone shooting and this one might be pretty good for that. Tan w/black spiderweb would be the color.

I would have to figure out which one of the PTG bottom metal to use on it. I guess you just buy their bottom metal and then use the spring and follower that is already in the rifle? How does that work?

            Good looking stock.

The PTG bottom metal if its the detachable box mag conversion your talking about form PTG they accept AI mags. Which they sell in 5 or 10 rd mags. The 5rd would be what he used the majority of the time im sure but the 10 rds look good in that stock and he might want for pig hunting, varmints etc.

You might want to call ptg and explain what you would like to do and they should be able to help.

Stock is ordered. After thinking about it more, I am just going to go with the BDL style hinged floorplate, just have to figure out which one I am buying. Looks like to make the AICS mags work I would have to order the ones for 300 Win Mag and bend the lips on them, that seems to be SOP for that. For what he is doing he doesn't really need that anyways.
