    Scope

I know, I know; probably catch hell over this thread, but I work too many hard hours to be searching all over the internet for what I'm looking for!

So you all chime in and help me narrow it down.

Got a Weatherby Vanguard in .257 Wby Mag coming, that'll be in this Friday. Need a scope for it. Got it somewhat narrowed down to these:

    Leupold Vari-X II 4-12x40
    Vortex Viper 4-12x40
Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 (don't they make it in a 40/42/44?; couldn't find it)
    Zeiss Terra 4-12x42

    #2
    Vortex

Might as well get it over with and ask you what are you planning on doing with?

From that list you got here I'd go with the Zeiss conquest without a doubt. I have the 44mm objective lense model and I think they have discontinued it's production and only produce the 50mm now

              In my order of preference....
              Viper or conquest
              Terra
              Leupold

I think the conquest and viper are fairy comparable, seems like you get more features for the money with viper, and it's good glass with a great warranty that's easy to use if needed. The Terra its a strip down from that, and i think the vxII line from Leupold is lower quality glass. That's all just my opinion of course, and I'm fairly certain all of them will suffice.

Conquest is my choice out of those. Followed by vx-ii. I'm not a fan of the vortex personally.

I had a feeling the Conquest would get a lot of thumbs up; Vortex too (I remember all the great reviews on here), but I'm curious why you'd put the Leupold last on your list.

I like Leupold, just not vx-ii. Most scope snobs want at least vx-iii or better. Just because it has the Leupold name on it does not mean it's a great scope. Nikon Monarch are good too, the lower grade Nikon available at Walmart and Academy in the glass case, not as good. Most manufacturers have a budget class and a flagship class, and a few in between. VX-ii is, IMO, Leupold's budget class. Better than Tasco and Barska and BSA, but not by a lot. I'm not saying the leupy is terrible at all, but from the list you provided, i feel like they are all good Scopes, but for me anyway, the vx-ii is the "least good" of 4 good options.....now, i have zero experience with the Terra, but I understood that it was the equivalent to the old conquest and the new conquests are upgraded. I could be wrong though.

Alright. That's kind of in line with what I was thinking. I have a Leupold Rifleman that is pretty impressive for the money and have had a few people recommend the Monarch. I had a Monarch several years ago and just wasn't really impressed. But that was a long time ago.

                        Thanks.

I highly disagree on a couple of things here.

First a Vortex Viper is nowhere the same quality glass as the Zeiss. Warranty is probably better on the Vortex. If you'd like to know why I feel that way PM me and I'll be glad to discuss why from personal experience.

Secondly the VX-2 line of scopes is not Leupold's budget line of scopes, far from it. I guess in the Leupold branded products the Rifleman series or VX-1 would be their budget line.

But Redfield is truly their budget line. There is a HUGE difference in quality between a Tasco, Barska, et al. And the VX-2 or even VX-1 line.

And I'll put Leupold service and warranty on par with anyone on the market. And their custom shop is just awesome.

                              Z.C.

But what are you using the rifle to do?

One thing Leupold has that can separate this choice....

Fire Dot with the CDS. One of my current favorites for hunting long range or lower light (dusk dawn) hunting.
