    Scope question

I hunt varmints primarily and pigs with my ar what little i do shoot it. I was thinking about buying the burris fullfield 2 tac 30 from sportsmans guide they have a good special right now and just thought i would give it a try. My question is with the small diameter objective gather enough light compared to what im use to. I know that glass quality makes a big difference just thought i would try this scope for a change. And may shoot more close range targets etc. With it.

MY OTHER SCOPES ARE ALL LEUPOLD, VIPER PST OR TRIJICON WITH 50MM OBJ.

no...the larger the objective lens the more light it gathers.

True. But at lower mags it is less important. Set both at 3x and it's going to be in discernable as the exit pupil on the smaller objective will still be near max for your eye.

I'm not much of a fan of the small objective scope. Sure, they are arguably less efficient, but I can't get past the aesthetics of how goofy they look.

I shoot 90% at night nowadays, and the SS fixed 6x has been fantastic. Generous eye relief, fast to acquire sight picture, and rock solid construction. Some might lump it into the "bargain" scope category. I think it is a lot of scope for the money.

I had a rotten dealing with Burris, and they will never ever get another dime from me.

I agree about the aesthetics. but large diameter scopes dont look the greatest on ARs either imo. It doesnt have to be burris it could be any brand.

I'm of the opposite opinion regarding scope ascetics on AR's and levers. I like the small tube 1x4 power.

Mine is a 1x4 millet with a 1 moa dot and a 10 moa circle illuminated.

Then look into the leupold Mark AR scopes. They are an excellent "bargain scope" here's looking through the 6-18x40... the bird is taking a metal nap on top of my feeder at 100 yards. If he appears slightly out of focus it's because he is. . I was moving yardages around a bunch and wasn't keeping up with the AO as well as I could have.

I had a 50MM lens on my .270 for many years and shot many deer with it. In my experience I did not see the big difference in light gathering ability.

As mentioned above, you always want to have your scope on the lowest magnification during low light conditions. I think this practice makes more difference than lens size.

TexMax is correct that it makes less difference at lower power. You can calculate the exit pupil by dividing the objective lens diameter (in mm) by the power setting. Example: 30mm objective lens divided by 4x = 7.5mm. Considering the human eye's pupil is only about 7mm at full dilation (actually it's less as we get older), anything above that is essentially wasted light.

I think I may go with a 2x10 or 3-15 power scope something along those lines. I have a 4-12 now I was going to pull it and put it on my 17 hmr and change the Ar scope

But i just picked up a couple scopes out of the classifieds and will be takin it off since its heavy. I MIGHT sell it.... maybe....
