They incorporated a drop lip in the bottom of the bolt which strips the rounds from standard AR mags. Will run Magpul mags but not as smooth as GI.
Caliber is true 5.56 not .223 so they run surplus ammo quite well.
My old, full sized MVP Varmint would shoot very well out to 600yds with green tip.
Bought this one without a scope. Put a Bushnell 1-4 shotgun scope on it. That's my favorite budget .223 quick pickup optic.
It accepts AR mags I beleive, not sure though. Not familiar with mossberg rifles
They do. I fondled one at the gun shop today. I was impressed with the AR mags.
Then I felt the stock... too abrasive for me.
Then I ran the bolt. It was like trying to find reverse in an old stick shift truck. Bolt is very sloppy, loose, gets caught and won't cycle very cleanly. I thought it might be a fluke so I picked up the same in the 308. Same deal. Bolt is spiral fluted but it's like dragging a sledge hammer across pavement.
If it wasn't for such a sloppy action I was gonna take it home, because of the AR mags. Instead I fell in love with a custom 243 on a 700 action, laminate bedded, with a custom barrel. Still trying to talk myself out of that one. (it was the same price as the mvp... so I'm not saying at what store it was just quite yet).
I have the MVP in 18"bbl. Bought it last year and I too have the same issues with the bolt being sloppy and the bolt not always grabbing a round to chamber. It seems as you have to hold the mag up tight to the receiver for the bolt to grab a round to chamber.
Metal mags do work best.
What does Thunder Ranch do to the MVP that makes it "Thunder Ranch" quality so to speak?
Having said that, mine IS a tack driver. Loving the 50 and 55 gr bullets. It taking the AR mags is a BIG plus.
I topped mine with Warne rings and a Redfield Revolution in 3x9x40. A light accurate gun if you can get past the factory short comings.
The only difference between the TR and the regular MVP Patrol is the stock color/logo and the fact that it comes with a thread protector instead of a flash hider. I just got a 3-9 Buckmaster to replace the UTG package scope and waiting on a 1/2" TOMB to try out my SAS Reaper on it. Even with the crappy package scope and 55 gr ball, hits out to 450 on 10" steel are no trick. Neat lil truck gun. I do with the action was a lil smoother.
