You got raped. It aint the parts we are talking about. Its the service. They are over priced.
Put it this way... i had a job priced they wanted over $1000.... the smith that did my work i paied $550.... and my smith built several world record sgooting guns in 2013.... HCR did not...
there was a guy in the classifieds trying to sell a HCR 7 stw or something wanting what he paid for it.. it was a rem 700 action gun.... not even custom and he spent over 3k... stupid stupid stupid...
Must be nice to always be the smartest guy in the room!!! Small room.
Not wanting to start anything but..... "Raping" as in the above statement usually means I sure wish I could afford one of those but seeing as how I can not see me ever owning one I will criticize them because I can't.
Knowing the folks that are posting in this thread, I can assure you they can and have a afforded multiple custom rifles. Some costing more than the $$ that are being discussed at hand.
You need to know about the person you are making comments about.

I guess since I have opened up a can of worms here and touched a nerve with a few of you I will try and explain where I was coming from.
There were multiple rape comments from multiple people, I was referring to no one in particular. I believe the "raping" statement to be a little over the top. Does the rifle co. being referred to here build a quality product? One of the people throwing out the "rape" accusation came back and clarified that he believes they do but for his own reason he would not pay that much for one of their products. Fair enough to each his own, every one is entitled to spend his or her own money as they see fit.
Where is the justification to blast a company that builds a good product come from just because your not willing to pay their price?
Evidently there a quite a few people that like the product and service they put out or the would not be as big and as successful as they are.

There may be some truth to that but I would venture to say that a lot of their customer base is people with money that know nothing about a custom build and let them pick everything. Lots of folks are not educated enough on all of the options so they just write a check when it's done.
I personally prefer to buy all my own parts and just pay someone to do the machine work, which when it comes down to it is much more important than all of the components combined. You can buy the best components available and have crappy machine work done and end up with a very expensive rifle that will shoot no better than a factory rifle that costs 1/3 the price.
Thanks for getting this thread cleaned up. 5K will most certainly get you a great custom rifle. Another thing to consider is....is this a pack rifle or just a deer blind gun. Weight will make or break a backpack trip. As for the guys at Hill country rifle, my dad and I have 5 rifles from them. We bought them all and took them there to be worked on. My rem 700 7mm has a leupold 4.5-14x40 with the CDS distance dial. I have shot 500 yds with it and all I have to do is turn the dial to the 500 mark and it hits every time. Still have to comp for the wind if it blowing. Some guys may have had a bad experience with them, we have not. There is a lot of great info being passed on here so good luck with the build, I'm sure it will turn out nicely.
