    1911 rail dimensions

    hello yall.

    i wouldneed your help.

Imjust finishing my first 1911 build bu the problem is that the rail looks not goo and i really like the look of the kimber or S&W light rail. and i want to mill moreslots n mine befor i send it out for acarekote job...

So would it please be possible for someone that owns a kimber or S&W railed gun
to measure the depth and width of the cross millings of the light rail? and also how far away they are from each other..

    would really appreciate it!

    Thanks in advance

Do you have any progress pics of your build? I think that a bunch of us would like to see that (I know I would love to).

              alright. some word before thepics.

Last year in october i somehow saw a video on youtube where someone built a 1911 from single oversized parts. Suddenly i also wanted to try and build my own 1911 right the way i like it with the parts i like...

Ok i started looking around and found no parts over here that i really liked.
              no oversized slide and frame....

After a while i got a hint the someone in germany makes 1911s and i called him and asked for a railed oversized frame and slide for a 5"45acp 1911...
After a while he said he has parts for me...
Ok i started doing the paperwork for importing the stuff to austria.

some weeks later the slide and frame arrived.
i wanted a slide to use a standad bushing with. but sadly the slide was not maschined for bushing and also the guy was very unfriendly and said its my problem andhung up the phone...

Dang. alright after a while of searching i found a gunsmith that did the maschining for me.

in the meanwhile i ordered all the small parts like trigger, MSH, safty part and so on from brownells. 100bucks at a time cause they wont ship ordes over 100 buck over seas....

The barrel i ordered from a custom barrelmaker in Austria. 5.75 inch with a nice .578x28 tpi on the businessend. and it arrived in march (only 4 months of waiting time) nd then I had to send it back because it was not oversized at all and fell right into the slide. also the barrellugs were cut waay too much...
ok another 6 weeks waiting for a new one

Alright waiting and after doing all the paperwork and workin about 150 hours or more on the gun i finally got a 1911 that turned out waaay better than expected.
There is no play at all when in battery. managed to get a decent hard fit barrel.
i shot it the first time last week.. 450 round of different ammo.was quiet ok

had to tune her a bit cause she was ejecting brass right on my face and wouldnt feed semi wadcutters and hollowpoint at all...

so after putting my dremel to work on the feedramp it shoots like a champ now, at least with 7 and 8 round mags, 10 round mags are still a problem with light hollowpoints like the 185 grain xtps, 230 grain Zombiemax are perfectly fine...

Sorry for the long read. now ill let the pics talk:

It was a very interesting experience but also veery challenging!
Building a 1911 with cutting the lower lugs, fitting a barrel and doing the slide to frame fit, all without a mill, just wth files and sandpaper and alot of patience. it was alot of fun (most of the time).

I think i assembleld and disassambled the gun more than 500 times during building..

video of the first shooting session. these were 200grain lswc handloads from a CMC 10 round powermag

Hope you like the pics.. some are not so good quality sorry for that..
Oh and also sorry for the writing im sure there are alot of typos in there..

              Thanks
              Daniel

I measured my Springfield operator today and the gap between cuts in the rail is .183"

Well im kinda happy with the result.
Everything is way tighter than expected.
The result could have been worse but also better. bt it was my first build so...

Great! i can work with that!
                        Thanks alot!

well i just found out after a bit more research on laser ligth units that it should ba a 1913 picatinny rail.

there is also a milspec standard for this.

Sorry that i bothered you for measurements..

Thanks! im also quiet happy with it.
Will be even better when i maschined the rail to standard 1913 spec...

it is made by RBF international in germany.
But i can NOT recommend the deal with them! the company boss is really not a nice fella to deal with.
He promised me the slide si cut for a bushing. when it arrived it was for a bullbarrel and when i called hin he just hung up the phone....

You have waaay better choises in the US. I tried soo hard to get a Caspian recon Frame in SS but no way i could get one over here... to be honest the rbf stuff was the only oversized frame/slide i could get, so i had to use it...
