    Steel Plate Backstop Question?

I am putting in a shooting range at the ranch and plan on using a steel plate backstop to deflect the bullets downward. What is the best angle off vertical to use for the backstop?

I've done some research but have found many contradicting opinions, ranging from 15 to 60 degrees.

Everything we've ever shot at has been roughly 15-20 degrees with no issues.

Was your target for Pistols or Rifles or Both?

I've been looking into this as well... for an indoor/basement range.

Depends completely on the size of caliber you want to shoot and the type of metal you are going to use.

5.56 and larger needs a 30 degree angle with a 3/8ths plate of steel or a 1/2" Armor Plate.
Anything smaller can use 42 degree angle with a 1/4" to 1/2" plate depending on type of steel you are going to use.

Personally Id go with the 30 degree for all of it in case you later want to shoot something bigger in it.

I found this table and info: http://navalfacilities.tpub.com/1027_3b/1027_3b0025.htm

Thanks for the info Coach W. 30 degrees sounds the most logical.

The plate I have is a 4'x8', 3/4" A-36, so I am not worried about it holding up.
