Looking for ideas on a hog gun need to reach out 300 yards at least nothing fancy can be a single shot . Looking more for caliber ideas.

I would have no problem using one of my custom 20 calibers but I shoot a lot , hand load, and know my rifles

for the average Joe, a 260 would be ideal ... if you wanted a long action low recoil , then 25-06

Pick one from .243 and up. I would exclude the 30/30 type calibers. I would go with the .257 wheatherby mag, point and shoot.

        Personally I like the 25-06

I shoot a lot of 22 caliber center fires and 300 yards is nothing for these guns. Specifically, I love shooting my 220 Swift but a 22-250 is easy to find ammo for if you don't reload and has comparable ballistics.
243, 6mm, 25-06 are all good, low recoil calibers as well and ammo is readily available.

Most center fires will get you to 300 on a decent hog sized target without much effort, my 308 only drops 3 minutes at 250, that's 7.5 inches, aim top of shoulder and you have a dead pig. But the drop from 250-500 is severe is that caliber. Like 7.5" at 250 to about 12 minutes or 60" at 500, plus wind starts to play a factor beyond the 250-300 yard mark.

Double yup. Inside 300 yards is pretty easy with some practice with just about anything. Beyond that and especially beyond 600 yards things start really changing and you have to know what you're doing.

But since you need a new gun and its for shooting pigs and you said a single shot is okay, I'll suggest a Barrett M99! http://www.barrett.net/firearms/model99

Any of your common modern deer rifle calibers will work. .270, .308, 30/06, 300mag, 7mm mag. Of course there's a whole bunch more, but these are probably the most common.
