I have a buddy who's giving my son a savage 243 for his birthday. The problem is the safety switch is rubbing the bolt. It looks like the switch has broken a piece off from the rubbing as well. Any ideas on how to fix it?
If you lift the bolt when pulling back does it do the same thing? If so, there's not much you can do besides file the safety down.
Yes it still rubs while pulling up on the bolt. And filing the safety down is not an option. This gun is going to my soon to be 7 yro boy
You can see in the pic that if I was to file it down, it would make the safety VERY thin due to the bolt hitting even the thinnest part of the safety switch.
K, no safety filing. I'm going to assume the bolt handle is what's rubbing (largest diameter on the bolt). You can remove some material from that (though it's already somewhat thin on the savages). Or maybe look into aftermarket bolt handles. Otherwise I'm out of ideas
Why don't you return it to savage for them to repair.
I called Savage, and of course they wouldn't give me an answer on price or even a ball park answer without shipping them the gun. They said it could be something as simple as changing the safety out for not more than $50. Or it very well could be fixed at no charge.
I figured out the problem. In the pic below, you can see where I pointed 2 Allen wrenches. The left one is pointed at the pin that holds the safety in place and the one on the right is pointed at a position spring. This holds tension on the safety I'd guess. That flat spring has bends in certain spots that kinda rolls on the pin if you will.
Well, I got to looking at it and thought it would work better if the pin was between the safety switch and the position spring. I put it between instead of on top and wahla.
The safety kinda slid into place before. Now it has that definitive feel to it almost like a click into position.
I put it all back together and had to readjust the trigger pull and sear and it now clears the bolt.
I just looked up the part the pin sits under, it is called a detent spring. I will order a new spring and a new safety bar that is actually the switch so there are no broken off pieces on the switch.
Interesting post and a good fix. The older I get I try to figure out how to do it myself and skip the headaches with the manufacturer if possible. GOOD JOB!
There's also a safety tension screw on top of the slider, it moves the whole assembly up or down putting tension against the top of the reciever and the trigger below. You have to pull the e-clip holding the trigger to get to fall out and the screw is on top.
That broken safety can be replaced for about $25, don't ask me how I know this
