    Home protection shotgun

I'm looking to pick one up soon and would like some suggestions. I want something affordable ( 300 ish ) and my number one priority is reliability for obvious reasons. I've looked at the H&R pardner pump protector which is an 870 clone an appears to be solidly built and affordable with mostly interchangeable parts to the 870.

What are some other affordable and reliable suggestions?

    Thanks guys!

I would look into a used 870, before buying a clone. H&R is possibly a decent company; I know nothing about them. I don't take chances on anything when it comes to protecting my family. I have an 870 that has performed well at the range and the lease. I trust that gun for that reason.

I am sure someone on the GS will be more helpful with H&R than I am.

If I went 870 I would definitely try to find an older model as some of the newer ones I have seen haven't been great quality and fit and finish wise. But it sure is a classic home defense gun!

Original Winchester Defender if you can find one used. The new SXP Defender is pretty slick, just picked one up a couple of months ago. Academy had the best price when I bought mine.

New Defender and my 30 year old Winchester, almost identical action. Real fast and smooth.

The 870 has always been on the top oft list. I stumble across a killer deal on a new benelli nova tactical and went with it. I have no regrets.

For the money the mossbergs aren't terrible. I'm not a huge fan of the safety and release are located but that's also due to a lot of 870 use.

Stoeger has a cool home protection double barrel.

Okay, I got some cool options to look at. Have y'all had any problems with any of these types of shotguns? I guess the better question is are there any to stay away from?

No problems from my mossberg 500a. You can regularly find them for 300 sometimes less.

I never had an issue with my 870. In fact, i never really took care of that gun lol. Its got beat to crap and kept on ticking. It was the super mag. I wish i never sold it. I have much nicer scatter guns but that 870 was unstoppable. I cannot speak for the new ones.

That is interesting that you say that, I love where the mossbergs safety is at and have tons of issues with other shotguns just because it is inconvenient to get to them. All my rifles safeties I engage with my thumb so naturally shotguns should as well IMHO.

I highly recommend the mossbergs. Great shotguns that don't get a lot of love on this site but I have sent thousands of rounds through mine and it is still ticking.

My Mossberg 500 always goes bang when I pull the trigger and cycles the next shell when I pump it. With a slug barrel and 00 buck it makes a softball sized hole in a pig at 7 yards. I assume it would do the same to anything else warm blooded.
