Buy a Ruger 1911 full size and Ruger Commander in 1911 and get both sizes I wanted for the $1500. Own Colt, Para, Kimber and Ruger in 1911 platforms and will pick the Ruger over the others. Only 1911 I have that won't beat the Ruger is a Fusion custom and it is a lot more expensive.

The Ruger is a fine shooter for the price.
I totally agree about the Ruger

I don't carry a high dollar gun, but not because I don't want to, it's just that I'm not willing to drop $1000-$1500 into the evidence locker and probably never see it again.

That being said, I've shot a lot of them, and BAR NONE, the best one I shot was an STI custom. Buddy of mine was given one by his brother in law who is an STI employee when he returned from his first tour in Iraq. He brought it out to my dad's place and we ran a few hundred rounds through it. It was by far the smoothest, most accurate handgun I've ever shot. Full power, 230gr defensive ammo had zero felt recoil. Felt like someone racked the slide, nothing more. We ran all sorts of ammo through it from the cheap low power crap from academy to the hottest loads you can find and it all functioned perfectly. I wouldn't even think about buying any other brand of 1911 if I had the money to burn.
Thanks for sharing this insight. I also like the looks and specs but have never shot the STI Tactical SS 5.0. It's a $1k better priced than the Wilson Combat X-TAC. I too prefer a 5" barrel.

Dan Wesson CCO or STI Guardian would be plenty fine for me. Would love to have a CCO 1911 for carry.

My kimber ultra carry has never let me down or even made me question it's ability. With that being said I've been drooling over the kimber desert warrior, or just the warrior if you don't prefer the desert tan. It's really all about preference though, you can't beat what feels perfect in YOUR hand.

That's a Kimber in my avitar the Tactical Pro II...carry it daily and it hasn't failed me yet in ten or so years of shooting.

You need to make a list and try to shoot all of the ones that interest you. Nothing wrong with a Colt...there are so many things that you can do to a Colt to bring it up to par with the higher end 1911's.

You won't go wrong with a Kimber, STI, Wilson, Les Baer or any mentioned above but you need to shoot one before you buy it.

Good luck. If you're down my way you can shoot Kimbers & Colts and my place.

I'd be more concerned about the 50,000 dollar legal bill that comes from shooting someone in self defense than the 1500 dollar pistol being locked up in evidence.

True, but why add to that bill when a much less expensive weapon will serve the same purpose? Additionally, if you have a service like Texas Law Shield or some other representation like a Police Union with attorneys on retainer, you have some of the big bill covered. Certainly not all of it, but at least some.
