    Building My First AR-15-Advice?

I'm going to take the plunge and was wondering are there any local places around Austin or surrounding areas to pick up a stripped lower rcvr?

What sites do you guys like to buy your parts from?

Thanks and please feel free to throw any other tidbits my way that may be helpful!

The FIRST thing you should do is go join www.AR15.com It's the world's greatest resource for the AR platform. If you can't find what you need there, it doesn't exist. It has some very useful tutorials that helped me to put together my first on, years ago.

BEFORE you build an AR you should spend some time over there and learn about the range of options; and determine exactly what type of rifle you want to build. There are SO many ways to go. Don't waste your time and just slap something together - build a rifle to suit YOUR PARTICULAR needs/desires. That's what makes the platform so awesome. Do you want a tack-driver capable of long range shooting, a home defense weapon, a medium range predator gun, etc, etc. You will save time and money and end up with something you love if you make these decisions prior to building/buying.

If you shop the internet and use the classifieds on AR15.com you can find some great deals on components. I would urge you to buy QUALITY parts. IMO it's better to take time to shop hard for your various parts and buy top quality - the better the parts the better it will 'run.'

On the lowers any one will work but I prefer billet lowers to cast lowers - the fit and the look is better.

Bravo Company is pretty great to deal with if they have what you're looking for; but there are, literally, thousands of good online sellers for parts. It's really hard to recommend just a few. Many of the big and reputable dealers will be represented in the classifieds on AR15.com

    Hope this helps

Look out if you order from mod1 sales. They have a bad habit of ripping off your credit card. Also m4carbine.net is a much better sight than barf.com or better known as ar15.com

Some good advice in this thread. About the only other thing I might recommend is check out "The other side of the ranch" forum on here... it's all about guns/shooting... some good info there. Might ask the mods to put your thread there. May bet some more good responses over there.

Good luck with the build and post up some pics when you get her done... well, scratch that.... you never get "done"... AR's just never seem to be perfect... always need some kind of tweak or add-on... That's the beauty and fun of getting or building one... one leads to another... Have fun!

Also, if you are thinking about an AR that might not be a .223/5.56 cal., check out www.68forums.com
