Can someone school me on what to look for in slug guns? I want a 12 guage and I want it to be a dedicated slug gun. What scopes? What brands? I dont want the cheapest, but a good quality gun that will last for years.
Really can't go wrong with an 870.. I have just a regular smooth bore 26" barrell with a tasco shotgun scope using 1oz rifled slugs and is very accurate at 100 yards .. The have dedicated slug barrels for the 870 with scope mounts on them. Lots of aftermarket accessories for the 870.
I would stay away from the 870 or 835 with the slug barrel.. Me and my buddy had issues with accuracy (I think due to the cantilever mount) you could just barely touch it and move it.. I would get a straight up made for slug gun.. I've got a mossberg 695 (I think its a 695) bolt action 12.. Haven't shot it yet just bought it on an impulse buy.. The Ithaca deer slayers are supposed to be sweet..
I'm turning a Mossberg Maverick into a slug gun. I plan on getting the ported rifle barrel, but I'm still undecided on how I'm going to setup the scope.
I have a 12 gauge 870 That I could put a slug barrel on. Actually did not know that until this morning. This gun will be for hunting our river bottom, thick brush/trees etc. What brand of barrel? Seems to several out there.
I have also been reading about the Savage 220f slug gun. Seems like a sweet deal there from the reviews.
Open sights is what I want though.
Opinions?

Where are you getting the barrel? I have 2 Mavericks
I have heard good things about the savage, but haven't been able to find any. Another good one I was trying to get was the H&R ultra slug hunters. I ended up finding a used slug barrel for my beretta and went with that. If I were to run across one of the 220 savages I would go with that in a heart beat!
The Savage's are more accurate than the Remingtons. But, my 870's and 1100's do the job from 100yds and less with no problem. I hunt the same type of terrain and most of my shots are 50-60 yds. Don't overlook a good 20 gauge. They also have very good knockdown power with less recoil.
I went with the 870 years ago as a combination so out of the box I had the 20 inch rifled barrel. I put a Bushnell 1.75-4x32mm shotgun scope on it and shoot Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 3" slugs. I zeroed it at 100 yards with my max range set at 150 yards although you could shoot a bit further but I worry about accuracy as the drop is pretty severe once you get past 150. This combination worked well for me as I dropped the buck below at 125 yards with no problem.
