    Recoil Question

I'm thinking about getting a new rifle to hunt Axis with at the lease. I had .270 , 25-06, 308, 7mm RM. I will not pick up the rifle probably 2-3 times a year, so I don't want to put a lot of money in it. Probably Savage 110 or Remington 700. I found a really great deal on a new Marlin XL7 30-06 ($249.00 NIB). I had the Marlin XL7 .270 before and I thought it was a pretty decent rifle. I have always heard that 30-06 kicked like a mule. The recoil from the 270 doesn't bother me but I really didn't care much for the 7mm RM.

Would 150gr 30-06 ammo have more recoil than 150gr 270. I don't want to use any recoil management ammo because it really wouldn't give me much better option than my 30-30 from what I researched.

    Any Comments or thoughts

Recoil is increased with bullet weight. Shoot a 55gr sabot out of a .30-06 and you won't feel any recoil at all. Bullet is going 4,080 fps and will completely cut a coyotes neck off (a slender pieceof hide left on iimpact side). Would be devastating for deer also in the lungs. Extremely flat trajectory.

The .270 much flatter shooting than the .30-06,

      I don't think I will ever have a shot over 200 yards

I would think that recoils has more to do with other than the bullet weight.
      7mm-08 140Gr has about 12.6lb of recoil energy and 270 140gr has about 17.1lbs.

True. Comparing the same caliber a 55gr will have less recoil vs an 180gr in a .30-06; or an 105gr less than an 180gr in a .40S&W.

30-06 isn't bad. To me feels like my 308.

270 is a necked down 30-06 so I would think it would be very similar too.

Shooting 180 grn rounds through my synthetic stock Mossbrg 100 ATR gets old after awhile. I love shooting 150 grn and under though... My rifle is very lightweight and has a cheap solid rubber recoil pad. Just shoot 150 grn, maybe 165 grn and you'll be able to send a bunch of lead downrange without an agonizing shoulder...

30-06 won't kick you too hard. You can handle it. How do you like those tires I sold you?

That .270 with 130s seems perfect to me. Or the .25 with 120s.

Buy an '06 or .270. Ammunition selection is there and if you shoulder doesn't like it put a limbsaver recoil pad on it.

My 30-06 with 165 gr. soft points shoots like a dream and recoil is very mild!..

As bullet weight and or velocity increases then felt recoil also increases. So the 270 and 30-06 both with 150 grain bullets are traveling at approx the same velocity then felt recoil will be the same if both rifles weigh the same. In the 30-06 as you go to 168 or 180 grain ammo velocity falls off but the felt recoil will increase. If you are only shooting out to 200 yards or so and you are worried about recoil then anything from .243 to 7mm-08 would be ideal. My personal pics would be 25-06, 270, 260 or 7mm-08.

Keep in mind that you can get reduced recoil rounds for most of the calibers you have listed. I started the kids off with a .223 then went to a .243. Now my boy is bigger than I am and has taken over the 7Mag. My little girl shoots regular 130 grain .270 all of the time now. She used to shoot reduced recoil until. I personally like the .270 and .308.
