I do alot of hog, deer, and varmint hunting. I stand hunt and walk alot while hunting. I want one rifle to hunt all of them. If anyone has experience with either platform would like to hear there opinions on both qnd which one they would choose.
I'd go with the m&p 10 just because ammo is so much easier to find and a lot cheaper.. It is going to be a little heavier but I think it will work better for you.. .308 has a lot of ammo options as well.. Never seen a shortage in .308.
I have been creeping on 6.8 forum and I think i have a pretty good idea of the pros and cons of both. I have come to the conclusion i want both lol. I wanted to hear about some first hand experience from either or.
Just to throw this out there if you are interested in both have you looked at the 6.5 Grendel.. Outperforms the 6.8 and it can be found at academy now..
All comes down to bullets or if you like tracking. A friend shot a deer with 6.8 bonded and it ran about 90 yards. He shot 2 more but used a fragmenting varmint load and dropped bothin their tracks. Same for any other ccaliber, a bullet that passes through does not deliver 100% of the energy (unless head or spine shot and a moot point) versus a varmint loaf that fragments shocks the system and delivers 100% of the energy without exiting.
If I had to pick one of my guns and had to forget the rest, it would be my Armalite AR10 in .308. Easy to find ammo - including Subsonic. Many different bullet weights. Can kill any animal in North America. Easily good to 1000+ yards. It does about anything you could ask for.
I have a bison 6.8 upper and the rest I built myself and that thing has dropped every pig I have shot so far with the Nosler 110 gr accubond from Silver State Armory. This thing is a tack driver at 200 yds (1/4 to 1/2" moa on a crappy bench (4 wheeler basket with blankets ). I hear it likes the 95 gr Barnes and 120gr SSts as well (alll depends on your rifle).
I love this gun so much that I never took my Kimber 308 out of the closet this year. I understand the 6.8 loses a majority of its punch past 300yds, which is not an issue for me.
If you do decide to go with the 6.8 get you a bison upper. You will not regret it.
Now if I didnt already have a 308 and was posed with the same question I would have to go with 308 due to ability to shoot well past 300 yds and ammo availability.
Commentary so far pretty much sums up my thoughts too. I have both, and I like both. I hadn't shot a big game animal with a gun for many years until a couple weeks ago. I was invited on a hog hunt for pigs that were tearing up a friends cultivated fields... I actually took 4 rifles that included both my 6.8 and my .308... All were AR's. When it came time to shoot I used the AR10 Armalite in .308... all the shots ranged from 210 yards out to 325 yards... I got 3 hogs before they got out of the field... sure was fun. Once the general deer season opens, I carry a rifle to my stand with me for one of those Just In Case moments... Since I got my 6.8, it's the one I carry... it weighs about half of what that AR-10 weighs, plus as others have said, it is a tack driver.
i have an dpms lr308 and i love it but the post above made a great point my brother has a bushmaster 223 and it feels a lot lighter! that would be my only complaint is the weight
308
Pros: plenty of ammo selection, more than enough power for any North American game, good long range round(600yds +)
Cons: Very heavy compared to the AR15 rifle, bulkier and harder to handle/manuever in a blind(20" barrel)
6.8
Pros: plenty of power for medium size game, much lighter rifle than AR10
Cons: ammo not as available, medium range round(400yds or less)
The weight of the AR10 platform is what drove me to sell the AR10 and keep the 6.8. It will kill anything I'll be hunting in Texas and I have bigger rounds for anything bigger. I like the compact, light weight AR15 platform over the heavier, bulkier, longer AR10. I reload so ammo availability isn't a big issue with me.
I'd go with the m&p 10 just because ammo is so much easier to find and a lot cheaper.. It is going to be a little heavier but I think it will work better for you.. .308 has a lot of ammo options as well.. Never seen a shortage in .308.
This.....the S&W M&P 10 has an 18 inch barrel....It weighs 7.7 lbs..a lightweight for an AR 10....That is the first thing that sold me on this rifle....U won't be disapointed....I kept mine light with a 2x7 Burris scope and magpul magazines....
Love my 6.8 and the 112 lb hog I shot this year ran a whopping 20 feet and died. I used a Sierra 110gr Pro Hunter at 2600 fps.
Out to 300 yds there is nothing in Texas you can't cleanly kill with it.
The 308 is superior but you'll pay a price in weight and recoil. Ammo price is similar but 308 is a lot easier to find in the stores. That's just a fact.
