    Helical Fluted Bolt Question?

I did a search but didn't come up with the info I was looking for so apologies if its been covered.

Aside from looking awesome, what purpose does the fluting serve on a bolt? I can grip the concept of weight reduction, and with a barrel it should help with cooling, but the blyg doesn't get that hot. I do like the look. I'm trying to get my money right for a custom build and I'm curious about the functionality. Any pros and cons will be appreciated.

Just looks and a little weight reduction.

It also serves a purpose of allowing grooves for dirt and grit to escape with close fitting bolt and action. Maybe important overseas in the sandbox but I would never let it get that dirty here.

This is it. If you are in an environment where keeping dust and dirt out of the action isn't possible then the flutes will help the bolt operate and but that's not something 99% of users need. It's mostly for looks.

                IMO, purely cosmetic

It has helped me keep the gun functional when its very sandy. Sand falls down into the flutes like a corkscrew, BUT the bolt is still pretty rough when there is that much sand around and in the gun lol. If the flutes were not there i do believe my rifle would have locked up.

**** dood clean your guns!!! I remember pulling 10lbs of sand from that 1100 I bought from you!

I've only "locked up" one bolt gun in my life... excessive pressure chasing some hot handloads. I thought I was gonna break the bolt off as I pulled.. I cant imagine getting it that nasty with dirt to do the same... At that point you need a broom and a bottle of CLP.

We purposely got it dirty to see what would fail if anything. Went shooting in 20-30 mph winds in between a couple unplanted farm fields full of sand. the gun was spotless when it arrived. I was mainly interested in seeing if the jewell would malfunction (it did not). it took me awhile to clean it all (im pretty religious about cleaning my guns.... you got one that had just sat in the safe forever lol!! i cant even say i cleaned that one as i never had shot it much and for what you paid for it you better not be crying)

clp would have helped a little.... it never did fully lock up but i had to fight the bolt a bit more than once. accuracy remained the same. i am pleased with that rifle.
