Help me set up my shooting range

I'm going to set up a fairly simple rifle shooting range on my property. I have about 500 yards to work with. What distances should i set up targets? Give me some ideas on target designs and bench setups. Pics will be helpful. All ideas are appreciated.

      just one of many ideas

I'd set up a concrete pad with 2-3 concrete benches, covered shooting area, and enough room for a reloading area behind the benches

are you gonna need berms ? or a backstop ?

if not, I'd build portable backers/targets that can be positioned at 50, 100, 200, 300, and 500 yds.

      see links for shooting benches

I'd love to be in your position, I'd go all out. Build a reasonable backstop, and a sturdy target board that sits on skids or wheels so you can move it around. I'd also build a concrete bench with wheels in the front and a trailer jack on the back so it can easily be repositioned as well. I'd think you would want 100 and 200 yard targets for sighting in, then everything beyond that able to set up at random distances so you can practice ranging and elevation adjustments.

This is at my farm on a pipeline ROW and not my house unfortunately so I will just be going with bench/es and targets. No berms will be necessary as there is a gradual hill the whole way. Hard to get a flat long area here without a pipeline ROW.

Not sure what your budget is but I'd start with safety and build a berm if required.

Then plan your project so that it could be modified or add on to as time and money permit. For example, start off with a slab using a wooden bench then add a roof work tables for cleaning and reloading and concrete shooting tables.
Id make permanent targets at 100 and 200 then portable from there. Steel gongs would be a must.

Last, are you able to lay out your range to correspond with the prevailing wind.

Good luck and enjoy many hours of fun.

As you learned recently I'm sure, me having that would be like a 120 shooting golfer needing Tiger Woods' private backyard practice facility. I'm looking for something a little more simple that will give me a more dedicated place to shoot my new toys. Good news is I'm finally graduating from the hood of the truck shooting at a plastic bottles

I am curious to see what you come up with. I am planning/thinking about basically the same thing at our place. I have long stretch of pasture road that I can utilize. Small shelter on one end with shooting bench. Then mark off road and put T-post in as the marker for each 50 yds. Put the target on a small trailer and set it up at the yardage I want to shoot.

                        i would go with target stands at 50, 100, 200. reactive steel at 250, 300, 500.

we built target stands that were easily moved or replaced. Basically Big PVC pipe( big enough for a 2x4 to stand in it) dug into the ground 10-12 inches. maybe 4 foot of 2x4 then the frame of the target started. not the best explanation, and I dont have pics, but if it something that you think may work... i cant draw either. Ha ha

for the steel, we use the "flashers" piece of ar500 steel attached to a piece of firehose or conveyor belt. you can connect a white/orange piece that will go from white to orange if you hit it, hence the flasher. we just hung the steel.

Good luck with the build, I wish I had a place to do something like this.
