If I'm using a sling, and I prefer to, barrel up. If I'm carrying barrel is down.

First safety rule that we were taught in NRA Rifle Instructor's and RSO courses is ALWAYS keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction. This is dictated by circumstances and common sense. Key is that it needs to be pointed in a direction where it won't cause harm if a discharge occurs. It's no different than what I was taught in Army BCT/AIT.

I've had 3 accidental discharges through out my life. 2 times muzzle down 1 time muzzle up. the worst damage was a small hole in the roof my my deer blind by my .222. Safety wasn't on I had gloves on I was reaching for my rifle while watching the game in front of me. I had a 1.5 lb timney trigger in that rifle. All 3 times I was thankful for all the lessons instilled in me throughout my life by the folks that taught me to hunt/shoot.

            Down.......

Safer than up because IF there is a negligent discharge the round or shot goes into the ground not the air then impact who knows where.

Second reason to carry muzzle down...practical application of body mechanics and less chance of over compensation coming onto target.
