First safety rule that we were taught in NRA Rifle Instructor's and RSO courses is ALWAYS keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction. This is dictated by circumstances and common sense. Key is that it needs to be pointed in a direction where it won't cause harm if a discharge occurs. It's no different than what I was taught in Army BCT/AIT.

I've had 3 accidental discharges through out my life. 2 times muzzle down 1 time muzzle up. the worst damage was a small hole in the roof my my deer blind by my .222. Safety wasn't on I had gloves on I was reaching for my rifle while watching the game in front of me. I had a 1.5 lb timney trigger in that rifle. All 3 times I was thankful for all the lessons instilled in me throughout my life by the folks that taught me to hunt/shoot.
