17 in the ear will knock them down no problem. Have seen other calibers fail with shots to the forehead. Not the best place to shoot them.

What is good about a .17?
The only asset is less pelt damage with a furbearer isn't it?
I believe the ammo is expensive so I doubt that is in the cartridge's favor.
      Someone please enlighten me.

I don't have one but I though the .17hmr did more damage.

That little rimfire is cooking at high power center fire rifle speeds like 2,500+ fps.

It is fast (more than twice that of a .22LR), it is jacketed (as opposed to .22LR and .22Mag in factory ammo) and very accurate. For those reasons they can reach out and touch varmints and small game at generally much longer ranges.

I've read good things about the accuracy of tHe savage axis, but don't have first hand expirence with it. This would be a gun in your budget and something you could slowly make improvements on like trigger and stock etc. Don't forget about a scope, base, and rings. I'm a big fan of the 22-250.

I had the savage .17 great in no wind but in wind couldn't hit paper 10-15 mph winds at 100yds all over place very light bullet I sold it and stuck with my 22-250 and 223 swift both are great rounds IMO

Does the $350 include a scope?

I just bought my son the Savage Axis in 30-06 and was very impressed with it right out of the box. 4 shots and I was in the bullseye at 125 yards and it groups great with factory ammo. Hard to beat for the money.

Given any thought to a .243? Pretty good all around in my book. Getcha some 55 grain ballistic tips, and fertilize the surrounding area with bits of critter! Pretty good whitetail cartridge also.Never shot a pig with one though.

Savage 17 package fr cabelas should be $325 or so. Great setup to have although light for hogs IMO. It will work but not optimal.

I'd try to flip the gift card for cash, and then keep an eye in the TBH classifieds. If you're patient, and know what your looking for, you can find some good deals.

thats an idea.. but the .17's ive seen on here have all been pretty expensive. im between getting a .270 or a 17. 350 including scope.
