Those with deer rifles...I need some measurements!

I am building a christmas gift for my brother in law. He wants a coffee table that has gun storage under a lift up lid. I do not own any rifles and I cant ask him what his guns measure without giving away what I'm doing. What I need to know is, how long is a typical deer rifle and shotgun? Also, how deep would a box need to be to store a rifle upright with a scope?

Thanks in advance for the replies!

Rifles vary a bunch. I actually looked up this today. A Remington 870 express shotgun is 49 1/2 inches long.

Tell him you're thinking about getting one that is really long and need to know how long his is for comparison

        Look up gun cases.

My 30-06 is 44 inches long, its an older model, before compact was cool. It has a regular sized scope, no see through mounts, I would go 8" deep to account for larger scopes/rings. My dove gun is 48 1/2', so if he also duck/dove hunts, I would account for that.

Most shotgun cases come 52". Rifles are shorter..

I would say make it 54" inside just to be on the safe side. Should be able to fit any shotgun or rifle in that length. Most rifles are 44-ish, my 300RUM is 48" and most shotguns are 50", but a semi auto with 30" barrels is a tight fit in a 52" case.

I'm no help right now on measurements, but you may want to consider making the racks tall enough so the rifles set in there upside down. Most deer rifles are top heavy with scopes on top, so they'll want to hang with the scope down.

                  52-54"x12-14" would be plenty
