Just received my sons Mosin Nagant

I bought a Mosin Nagant online and went and picked it up this morning. The dealer told me it would be "covered" in a protective coating...and boy was he right. It is covered in a vasoline type substance that I need to remove (can't remember the name of the coating). Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to remove this coating?? I was thinking of wiping it down to get the bulk of the jelly off, then use a mild mixture of dawn dishwashing detergent and water....will this work? is there a better way to remove the coating??

Also, I need to have this rifle checked to to make sure it is safe to shoot...I have heard "stories" online of people receiving them and they were modified and not safe or unable to shoot....the last thing I want is to fire a round and have a cartoon moment....Do any of you have a gunsmith recommendation on the south side of Houston I can take it to and have it checked out??

    I appreciate any input....

    Cosmoline!!! It's some nasty stuff!

I'd wipe off all you can then spray it with carb or brake cleaner and use that to help get the rest. Take the barreled action out of the wood tho. That brake cleaner can be harmful to it.

Not the safest thing but I always use gasoline. Disassemble the metal and soak in gasoline. Then scrub with a toothbrush. It will take it right off.

On most Mosins the stock is pretty rough anyways. So It'd probably be ok. If you got one that's in really good shape O probably wouldn't but If it's just an average Mosin, I'd say go for it. Just don't let it sit.

I put the stock from my mosin (the one in my avatar) on the dash of a truck in the middle of summer on top of a black trash bag. The cosmoline bled right out. You might try a heat lamp that's far enough away it won't damage the stock.
