reloading question

a coworker and I were talking about reloading,

he had read something about if you were to shoot a bullet out of your rifle, you can still use the same casing in the same gun without triming the casing down?

is this true?

ive been told to always trim it.

Typically not necessary to trim if under max length.

Cases stretch during firing and resizing. Stretch varies due to chamber dimensions...etc. They will need to be trimmed eventually. As long as they are under max case length listed in any reloading manual.

I always measure mine after the first firing and trim if needed. Some cases stretch more than others as they are thinner. I then measure each case after 4-5 firings. All cases will nned to trimmed at one time or another.

I think you mean sized. You can neck size and use that case in the same rifle without full length sizing.

I am going on my third reload for a 300 WSM on eight Winchester cartridges. I measured after the first and second shot and there was no need to trim. You will find it different on each manufactured type of case. Some individuals will put it through a trimmer just in case, but I find it easier and quicker to just measure each case if you are doing a small amount of rounds. If you are reloading an AR type of round and you will be reloading a crap load of rounds... to trim down the time spent on reloading, I would put it through a trimmer instead of measuring each round.

That should be a part of the Resizing Die that has to be done anyway...Deprime, Resize (case & neck), Prime, Powder, Bullet, go bang, repeat process...

Also, neck sizing is not for auto-loaders. For semi-auto always full length size.
