Opinions on Savage AXIS XP 25-06

My 11yr old has been shooting his .243 since he was 7yrs old and has been wanting a 25-06, although he has enjoyed bow hunting more over the last couple years. Mom has a set Christmas budget for each of our 4 children so I'm trying to accomplish getting him this gun and still having some wiggle room for other items.

Any thoughts on this gun? Good or bad?

    Thanks in advance.

I'd try to find a Marlin XL7. Just my opinion but, same price range & a lot nicer rifle. My wife has one in 7mm-08 and it's a sweet shooter.

Not sure the difference in the Axis Youth and Axis XP Youth, but we picked up the Axis Youth in 7mm-08. My kiddos have dropped a deer and pig so far. My youngest turns 8 next week.

I would say that the gun is nice for the price but my concerns/complains are:

      1. It might as well be a single shot. No way a kid could work the bolt it's so stiff. Hopefully it will break in with time.

      2. The trigger is awful. I will get it replaced after the season.

      3. The piece of the magazine that "clips" it into the gun is plastic and feels like it could break at any moment.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It is a unique situation as I'm trading in my XDs .45 and $200 for the new rifle and a new Diamond Infinte Edge Compound Bow.

Pretty good deal for you! The Axis rifles do feel cheap though. There are finally some aftermarket triggers and stocks for them. That was always the limiting factor in the past but now you can upgrade it at a later date if you want.

After reading multiple reviews, if we indeed decide to go with a Savage, I'll pay the small increase in price for the Trophy Hunter model. Reviews are much more favorable.

            Thanks for your thoughts.

I bought one in 223 for my oldest son. I honestly like the rifle even though the trigger is bad. There are mods online to improve the factory trigger along with the replacement triggers. Boyds now makes aftermarket stocks for them as well. All in all, I think they're a pretty decent option.

Yall are tough. I have the savage axis 25.06 for my wife. The gun is a great shooter. Killed 5 dear, ram and a pig. Trigger feels okay to me and so far has handled the abuse of being shoved into the case.

My daughter has a left hand .243. It shoots and groups great. The trigger is very stiff and the bolt is a bit hard to work. All in all a decent rifle. I do agree that the marlin is the better of the two. I had one in .270 and it was a real nice shooter.

I was also looking into the Savage, but that Marlin is intresting also.

Trophy with the accu trigger is hard to beat for the price

I had an Axis in 22-250. That thing would stack bullets like it's nobody's bidnis. It definitely shot better than I did. Good luck.
