    1894 Winchester model 1873 44 cal

I was looking at a 1894 Winchester 1873 44 cal short barrel that I might have the opportunity to purchase. Working condition, but the wood has been aged and worn.

They are selling it for $1000, but I might be able to talk them down to 600-700.
I know that the 44-40 ammo is harder to get.

    What do y'all think?

If I had the funds I would be all over that at 700. They do not go for much cheaper than that unless they are really really rough. And I could be wrong but if it is that old you may not be able to run smokeless rounds through it which will make ammo even harder to get, but don't quote me on that.

The wood has some splits in it.
I was looking on eBay and found lots of parts.

Might be a good gun as long as the barrel hasn't been shot out.

Waiting to sell an old Fender amp, then I'll think about buying.

I have placed the amp on eBay and already half way to my starting offer that I'm going to ask to the seller of the old gun. Happy happy happy!

The 1873 Winchester is not as strong as the 1892. If its to be a shooter loads need to be kept to a moderate level. Also changing of any parts can kill value.

I'm going to pass on the gun. I managed to get the seller to come down to $850. But the shape of the wood and wear just was too much. The magazine tube was very loose and moved left and right. Also, a lot of slop in the lever.

I'm going to put that amount into a good 1894 in 45-70 if I can find one.

Also, what do y'all think about the .35 rem? I have a full box and wondered about just getting a nice Marlin or Henry.

I love the 35 Rem. Wish I still had mine. It got sold when my oldest was born and needed money more than guns. Also with the 35 Rem you can load handgun bullets designed for 357 mag. A 180 gn XTP at about 2200 fps is an assume hog load.

What rifles are out there in .35 REM?
I saw the Marlin 336, but what else?

I've been hankering over levers now......
My deer lease owner has her deceased husbands Marlin Glenfield 30-30 with scope. Super clean. She's asking her son if he'd want it or wouldn't mind me having it.
The man was my electronics mentor and I worked for him 3yrs. I now help her out on the ranch in trade for hunting. Be real cool to have that gun!

If not, I'm hunting for some others.
                    Found a few today,
                    1973 Winchester 94 30-30
                    70's Marlin 336 .35 rem long barrel
                    Marlin 336 44mag

I am a big fan of the marlin 336 since the are side ejecting. The .35 rem or 44 mag will both treat you right, but out of the 2 I would probably go with the .44 mag just for the extra capacity to lay into pigs with.
