Thinking about switching to right handed.

Between a lack of quality rifles available in left hand and the pain in the rear trying to find ones that are made...Im thinking about teaching myself to shoot right handed. I do everything righty except shoot guns and play pool. My grandfather was a lefty and taught me to shoot.

    Thoughts?

Going to put a scope on my old 22 and slowly move up in caliber. Prob try to get ready to hunt righty by next season.

I makes sense to shoot a rifle with the bolt handle on the opposite side of your trigger finger. That way you can maintain your shooting grip and work the action with your free hand.

Which eye is your dominate eye? I'm right handed and shoot right handed but I'm left eye dominate, so I have to close my left to focus.
I feel it's more important with the bow or open sited firearms to shoot with the stronger eye.

        I wish I shot lefty
My buddy is just like u... Shoots lefty (with a right hand action) but does everything else righty..
He is lights out when it comes to shooting long range. Also when he shoots he keeps his rifle shouldered and just racks another in the chamber with his right hand.

Im not sure him shooting opposite helps or hurts his long range shooting.

Im going to shoot some 22 this weekend from the right side.

I feel your pain when looking for a LH gun.

I have a dominant left eye and am right handed, I shoot lefty. There are good things and bad things about that. One good thing is you can be wicked fast running a bolt gun prone if you need to. But it does really slow you down offhand. Pick your poison.

I don't understand the following logic. Can you guys explain a little more?

I can see this if you are only shooting off a rest with and you have to cycle rounds quickly. I don't "grip" my hunting rifle, My trigger hand is compelety relaxed for increased accuracy. Now, maybe on a semi-auto assuault rifle with a pistol grip, I could see this argument. Is that the arangement you are referring to?

I could not possibly keep my hunting rifle shouldered properly while using my non trigger hand to come in and manipulate the bolt; unless, like I stated higher up, I am using a pistol grip on a very balanced, short barreled rifle.

Also, if I am shooting a rifle prone, my non trigger hand is usually holding my stock at the correct elevation (bean bag squeeze, etc.) I would not want to move THAT hand, but would rather move my trigger hand that is not squeezing anything and cycle the bolt.

EDIT: my son is right handed left eye. Right now he is shooting a single shot, so it doesn't matter. My logic tells me I need to get him a LH gun for the reasons I stated above. I am just trying to figure out why your logic would dictate differently. If I didn't have to buy a special LH gun, that would be awesome, but I would need help understanding your reasoning.

THis would be the key issue.....if the right eye is dominant...shoot right handed....if left eye is dominant...shoot left handed..

My older brother is a lefty. He shoots shot guns lefty and rifles righty because all we had growing up was right handed rifles. It doesn't seem to bother him to much after he had some practice, and now that he is in the army he got plenty of training and he doesn't mind at all. Maybe one day he'll be able to shoot as good as me

Eye dominance is a key issue here. If you are right eye dominant, I think you will be able to make the switch fairly easily.

I am RH and Left eyed. I have been fighting cross dominance with the shotgun for years. It is not as bad with a rifle, but it is still a problem. I can actually shoot a little bit left handed, but mounting, and anything that requires reaction time I can't do with the off hand. Long crossing shots that I could never hit right handed I can hit all day left handed.

I stepped into a bow shop for the first time last week to start shopping for my first bow. I am starting off right this time. Lefty bow for me.

Just did a few eye dominance test and every one came up left. Back to looking for guns.

Left eye dominant right handed, I shoot long guns left handed and pistol with my right hand but line up with my left eye.. I can shoot a rifle right handed but it just does not feel right! I have and use a few right handed rifles but my main hunting gun is left handed. Like others have said, its actually better to shoot a righty prone or from a bench but my hunting gun will always be left handed. Good luck finding the gun your looking for.
