    problems with Remington 700 vsf

Having troubles with this gun grouping. Ive got a nightforce nxs on top with leupold quick detach rings on it. The gun shot .5 groups with the stock remington stock at 100 yards, but I felt the stock felt and looked cheap so I changed it out with a bell and carlson m40. After the stock change the gun wont get under 2". I will be the first to admit that I am no gun expert by any means and I have so much invested in this gun already, I dont want to just run to burdett and sons with it (local gunsmith). Gun still had the crappy xmark trigger in it, but I dont think this is part of the issue. Any suggestions?

Is the barrel contacting the stock in any place?

Have you checked if the action has even contact with the bedding block?

While I agree the xmark isn't the greatest trigger in the world, it shouldn't be the issues if that didn't change.

I'd make sure the action screws were torqued properly and then take a look at the scope and make sure there aren't any issues with the bases or rings.

Action screws not torqued right ? Bedding issues with new stock ? Something in a bind ? Several things it could be. I would put the original stock back on and try it. Might give you some indication whether you tightened the action screws too tight. One stock might free-float the barrel, the other might have fore-end pressure.

My money's on the new stock. Can you run a dollar bill under the barrel all the way down? I bet you can on the old stock. If it would me, I would sand out the groove on the new one until it passes the "dollar bill test" easily, then check your groups again. That was the case on my XS7 .243, and it tightened my groups from 2" to .5".

I don't think I would have messed with a gun that shot .5" groups.
Good luck trying to figure it out.

I have the exact same gun with a bell and carlson also with a zeiss 4.5-14. I was getting groups around .5 but last trip to the range i had my first 3 shots touching then it kinda jumped around. I need to investigate it further on another range trip

I'm with you there! I picked up a Rem 700 a while back with plans to have the barrel cut down, replace the crappy plastic stock, new trigger etc. After shooting it one time and getting a one hole group, I have changed the x-mark trigger out for an old style, but can't bring myself to do anything else to it.

make sure the box for the magazine didn't come out a little and cause some pressure on the bottom of the stock

Is the stock pillar and glass bedded , or did you just drop it in ?

I would have changed the Xmark trigger on day 1

The stock is touching the barrel. Run the dollar bill between the stock and barrel like Ruark said. I've had a couple of guns with a stock change do that.

The stock isn't touching the barrel. It is free floated all the way. One thing I did do is oil the screws before I tightened it to the stock so maybe I over torqued it. Ill drop it in the old stock today and see how it does.

You need to have the gun bedded. It is also a good idea to get a torque wrench and tighten the action screws to the same torque#.

You might not have even contact on the recoil lug. If you can put some ink on the recoil lug and put it back in the action and tighten everything down. Then pull it apart and see where you have contact.
A bedibg job well fix that.

The contact it has with the new stock is definatly an issue like the guys have said especially where and how the barrel bedding contact is and so tightness of the screws. I have ran into grouping issues with one of mine it was just a dirty barrel. I ran patches through and all that jazz after every time I went out and shot. I went and bought new carbon solvent and copper solvent ran the brush through it and put a good bit of carbon solvent in it and leaned it against the wall barrel down and let it set a while the ran brush and patches through it. I did this with both carbon and copper solvents for a couple days and made dang sure it was spotless. I ran a a few throught in after that and it was back to stacking 3 on a dime at 100yds!!

You haven't change the grain or style or brand of ammo have you??

Assuming you are using the same ammo, it is the stock as that is the only thing that changed.
