    8mm06 build questions

Figured out a build I'd like to start with my sons and have a few questions. This will be strictly a hunting rifle, and using components for loading for calibers we already have. Can I take a 8mm Mauser rifle, and just have the chamber reamed to 8mm06, or will I need to have a new barrel installed into the action? If anybody has a 8mm mauser they are not using, I'd be interested in buying it. Dont want to cut up the 8mm that my Dad is leaving me and the boys, too much sentimental value. Thanks in advance GS, and as soon as I have the components to start, Ill do a live build thread. Since my newest hunter is starting, 1/2 of my hunting rifles are now claimed, so I may as well build something for me to use until they claim it as teenagers.

    isn't a 8MM mauser a rimmed cartridge? maybe not

I would leave it and find a 35 Whelen if you want a large cal based on the 30-06 case...it's a cool round.

        good luck

Good call, I was thinking backwards. Thats why I ask here, saves money in the long run and narrows research. Thanks gs

I'm guessing it would make things easier, and having access to brass with proper headstamps (ocd kinda thing), reloading data, factory loads if necessary, etc. Looks like I'll be searching for one of these. Did a cost comparison, and on an enlisted mans budget, it looks better in briefing the spouse on forgiveness over permission

8mm-06 was apparently a popular conversion in post-WWII America with all the bring back K98's. GI's found they could have a relatively inexpensive re-chamber done and use plentiful 30-06 cases to make the wildcat. A lot of folks think of the 8mm (7.92mm) Mauser as the "German 30-06", but I believe it's the other way around with the '06 actually being the American 8mm Mauser - the cases are that similar (and both are rimless).

Enough trivia, the main concern these days is that the supply of K98's has dwindled to the point that they're no longer cheap war relics, they're actually becoming valuable collectibles. As suggested above, the .35 Whelen makes better sense for a large bore rifle based on the '06 case, along with the .338-06. A simple re-barrel to a standard-length action with the common .473 bolt face gets you there.

Remember, that's all my opinion. Do what works for you, 'cause my opinion and 50 cents won't even get you a decent cup of coffee.

Quote of the day Sir, pure greatness! Thanks much, it was a good opinion. I'm just bored this hunting season with no lease, and having a late start to scouting public land. I found some Encore barrels pretty reasonable in 35 Whelen, and since I wanted a non magnum thumper barrel for it anyways, it may be just the ticket. I can work up loads after I get it pieced together with a real scope, etc.

I've got a gun you might be interested in. It is a g98/40 that had been rechambered to 8mm-06AI. It's a German war gun but not a Mauser action...pretty rare gun and worth some $ if it hadn't been sporterized.

I've had it for a few years and haven't done anything with it.

This. I have been looking for an excuse to build a 35 Whelen. Virtually the same as an 8mm/06 but much easier to find already formed brass.
