    Mcmillan Stocks

I'm looking at building a light mountain gun in a mag and was looking at the McMillan Ultralight. Does anyone have any experience with these stocks?

    #2
I don't have any experience with the Ultralight however I did purchase a McMillan Lazzeroni Sporter for my custom 300RUM. When you order from them, you specify your action and barrel contour. I also increased the LOP so it is a little longer and fits me better.

The gunsmith doesn't have to do anything to the stock.

Quality production and worth the money and time.

How light do you wanna build it ?

Anything to light and you will have accuracy problems due to smaller barrel contour and barrel heating up real fast

Better wear a mouthpiece otherwise your teeth will fall out , rifle will kick like a mule getting castrated

I've probably owned 50 McM stocks since 1988 . McM stocks used to be the stocks all others were compared to

Lately, QC has dropped and finished stocks are not what they used to be. Competition has caught up and passed McM in my opinion

Still a great stock, but better values out there with faster delivery times

Just curious CB, but who do you feel is faster/better? Genuinely interested in your thoughts on this.

(FYI - I still own 10-12 McM stocks, but my last 2 purchases were Manners T3 and a MSC T5A

you can find "used, like new" HS Precision stocks on the www for $200.
$50 skim bed job and your done

          Bell & Carlson makes a nice affordable stock priced $200 ~ 250.
Professional pillar and glass bed job for $200 and you ready to roll

Manners stocks (below) are incredible quality and finish...
same prices as McM and lead time is 5-6 months. (McM delivery is 6+ months).

CB, you mentioned being too light I might lose accuracy and the gun might kick like a mule. I'm currently using a true pre-64 model 70 featherweight in a '06 cal. That kicks like a mule and I've shot everything up to a 300 mag and nothing is even in the ball park of that beast. Also, isn't the model 70 featherweight a 26" barrel, I guess I'm fishing for a solution on the barrel thing.
I was wanting to keep it in the same weight range as my featherweight, 6#'s. After doing some quick counting, I can pick and choose my parts for cheaper then buying over-the-counter gun. Plus, I can buy the parts and build without alarming the boss of the build cost.

If you want a featherweight why go with a magnum? As CB said it will not be any fun to shoot, if you are not packing it in long distances there is not much need.

If you stick with a short action you save a little weight and find a caliber that will kill anything in north America.

I will be packing the gun up and down the mountains and that is why I want to keep everything, overall weight, at a min. That's why I was asking about the Ultralight stock, and have other items like the barrel to research. I'm looking at modeling the Christians Arms rifle but, if possible build for around the same price or less.

ballpark numbers using general rifle cartridge info

                      7.5 # 30-06 shooting 150 gr pills yields 20.1 ft/lbs recoil energy

                      7.5 # 7mag with 165 gr pills yields 27.6 ft/lbs recoil energy

7.5 # 260 Rem with 129 gr bullet yields around 14.6 ft/ lbs recoil energy

CA rifles will cost you $2600-5000 just for the rifle

you can build a lt-wt rifle for $1300-1800 less the carbon wrapped barrel
