There are stores throughout the greater Houston area called 1/2 Price Boxes (www.halfpriceboxesusa.com) that sell boxes specifically shaped for shipping rifles. They are plain brown and are about 8" wide, 3" deep, and 48" long. $4.75 after tax.

I just check with my buddy at the local gun 'n pawn and pick up the empty boxes from rifles he's received.
