    Slide fire + belt-fed = $6000

I'm too lazy to forward the link from my other computer to post it here, but CNN Money did a video blurb on Slide Fire and their plans to release a fully legal belt-fed AR using the Slide Fire stock. Only $6000,which I think is less than what you will spend on a Class 3 M-16.

Belt-fed is cool, but I think a couple Beta-C twin drum 100rd mags will provide plenty of effective suppressive fire for 10% the cost.

It will get to hot and melt the barrel.

Do you have info to back that up?

It won't with a good barrel.

If a dude is gonna spend $6k, might as well spend a little more and jump into a true FA. Because I assure you it won't be worth 6000 when your done.

      And a FA will be.

And FYI there is already a semi auto belt fed AR platform available. Right around $4500. Throw that slide fire on it if you like wasting ammo.

Carbines and "assault rifles" are particularly ill-suited to be used as crew-served weapons, and if you have a belt, you've really got a crew-served weapon. The barrels are too light and not easily swapped out. You NEED spare barrels on a belt fed weapon unless you want your barrel to glow white hot, melt and have rounds blow through the top of the barrel. Even on a squad automatic, you should be able to change barrels (my one complaint about the BAR).

You might also cook off rounds from the chamber getting too hot. That's bad news! The AR fires from a closed bolt, whereas belt-fed MGs (and even most SMGs) as a rule fire from an open bolt to allow for cooling.

And if you're not firing enough rounds to require you to swap barrels, then you're not firing enough rounds to need a belt. Just change magazines. No belts to get full of mud and crud. Makes the weapon lighter, too, to not have a 7 pound belt hanging on there.

          Just my personal opinion.

            I agree.

                gatorade

                lol

ive fired a bunch of FAs, while not the amount some of the military guys here have, ive shot plenty, and a 60 round surefire mag was PLENTY of ammo. the 100 round drums are super bulky and heavy. and while a full auto is fun, you can hit crap with em.... i prefer the three round burst

No, maybe you can't hit crap with them but I can. Learn trigger control.

if a guy goes wide open on one, your not putting every round on target. unless your heavily trained.

by all means im no pro, but i know how to control one good enough. we arent in iraq.... so it doesnt really matter

I have an M16 with a bipod. I can stay on target with it wide open. Try again.

good for you. can you do the same offhanded? no bipod? is it suppressed?

I don't spray and pray. I can do a three shot burst with trigger control. I have three M16's. Some are suppressed and some aren't.

thats my point.... i prefer 3rd burst or suppressed FA but know when to let off the trigger.

point being, most cant shoot a FA and hit anything except with the first 2-3 rounds.
