i agree with blake on most of it except the caliber lol.

if your not a pretty hardcore reloader, buy something you can still use factory ammo in just in case you run short and NEED some.

as far as the trigger, my jewell is head and shoulders above any timney i own. both a good triggers but the jewell is the best i have pulled.

as far as the boyds stock? they can still be accurate. in fact, i have been working on a 243 that i have. factory model 700 youth barreled action, boyds thumbhole stock off a vls converted to bdl with a timney 510 trigger, with a vx3lr 6.5-20x40mm scope on it. nothing fancy, but its a shooter....

i do say you should go with an aftermarket barrel, kreiger would be my choice. but this was shot with a gun i put together for about $500 minus optics.... subtract the bullet diameter and thats a .187 group. hard to beat that in a factory gun

by the time Ike recv's a Krieger barrel, both of ya'll could have a new addition to the family

Krieger lead time .... 1 year

          Bartlein ... 9+ months

PN 3 groove barrels are sooooooooooo easy to clean and shoot with the best barrels out there. 3 groove advantages: longer barrel life, easy to clean, greater velocities, amazing accuracy .

Also if you go with the 257 Ackley Improved you can shoot factory 257 Roberts in a pinch.

                      Ike,

All custom barrel manufacturers are going to be within $25 on price with the same options. I prefer cut rifle barrels over button pulled so I tend to prefer Krieger, Bartlein, Rock etc.

As to caliber, if you are considering a 1/4 bore, 257 Weatherby is the way to go. 80 grain bullets @ 4000fps up to 120 grain @ 120 grain at 3000fps. I've shot 2 deer with mine using 115 grain Bergers from 80 yards to 380 yards and they folded like a cheap lawn chair where they stood.

My first custom build was with a Stiller action. My most recent is with a trued 700 action. We will see how it turns out. Truthfully knowing what I know now, I would probably go custom again. You really don't save that much money by the time you true up a 700 action.

All of my Remington 700 actions I own wear Jewell triggers. I haven't tried a Timney, but all I know is the Jewell's are by far the finest triggers I have felt.

As to stocks, all of my customs wear McMillans. Again I have little to no experience with Manners or HS Precision on other manufacturers. The main thing I like about McMillan is that they don't require an aluminum bedding block to make them stiff and they are absolutely custom built to your specs. With them, you aren't settling for anything with them.

You will have plenty of time to save pennies because you are looking at a 6-12 month wait for everything.
