Squib round in an ar..Wasn't pretty

Tue afternoon had a couple guys come up wanting to shoot 50yds. I got them settled in at two benches side by side. One had a sks and the other had a bushmaster ar 223. The guy with the sks joked "here goes the first shot. Hope it don't blow up." I asked him why would it blow up? He laughed and said it was an old brand new gun. I watched his first shot. It fired fine. A few minutes later he brings me an unfired round that had the bullet shoved down in the case. He asked what could cause this? I walk over and take a look at his gun. Its bone dry. I send him to the range office to purchase some clp. While he's gone his buddy with the ar asked me to take a look at his ar. It keeps jamming. I pull the bolt back and its dry. Brand new gun. When his friend returns wth the oil I tell them both to put enough oil so that they look wet and work the bolts back and forth several times. I move back to watch the range. An off duty ro walks up and I turn around to shake his hand. As our hands touch, kaaabooom !!!! I spin around to see a black puff of smoke rolling at me. My first thought was"there's no muzzle loaders on the bench." As I'm having this thought, the guy with the ar jumps out of his chair grabbing his face. I rush to him asking if he is injured. He said "my gun blew up and hot gas burnt my face " I see no injury to his face so I turn my attention to his gun. First thing i notice is the mag is smoking. I eject the mag and look down in it. The rounds in it are facing all directions. I ask his buddy if it was a 60rnd mag. He said no its the 30rnd that came with the gun. It was about 4" wide. The bottom plate had blown off so I dumped the remaing ammo out the bottom. It all looked burn from about the middle of the case up. I asked if it was reloads. His buddy said no its hornady we bought at cabelas. As I sift through the ammo I dumped out of the mag I see two rounds with the bullets shoved into the case. I asked what happened? He said they were from the jamming issue he was having. I turned my attention to the gun. The bolt was welded closed. I informed him he would need a smith.

I see ar's everyday with jamming issue's. Most of the time it's a new dry gun. Sometimes it's a ramp issue. When I see damaged ammo from a jamming issue I inform the shooter " if it sounds or feels different, don't shoot the next round. "

I don't want to think what might have happened if he would have had a plastic mag. I was standing about four foot behind the shooter. He would have taken most the plastic shrapnel but everyone else in the area would have got some too.

    Tbh brothers,
If your having an issue with your gun and its damaging the ammo. Get the damaged ammo away from your gun so you don't accidentally feed it again.

Glad no one was hurt. So they were jamming the bullet into the casing because of the feed problem and he tried to keep using them?

I'm not sure if it was on purpose or accidentally. Not really sure if that's why it blew up. Just the only explanation I could find.

It put the same marks on the rem ammo. I don't think its an ammo issue. Look forward to seeing it at the range again.

Were the other bullets in the mag set back from recoil? OAL on them within specs? Did any of them feel lighter than the rest from possible light charge of powder?

He had a few jam. The bullets were pushed back in the cases on the rounds that jammed. I figure he had a jam and cleared it into the chamber.
