Based on the quotes I received here in Houston that's a great price. It was so high down here that I ended up chopping and crowning it myself.
i have looked at that but the cost of the tools needed to crown are more than getting it done. I would like to do it myself i just can't see spending more on the tool than getting it done.
this is not going to be a precision rifle by any means, it is an old spoterized 303 british that i am giving a make over. Which it is hard to spend almost what the gun cost to have it cut down.
I am highly considering doing it myself just to get some experience...it is going to be real interesting drilling and mounting the front sight.
In that case do it yourself. Leave an extra half inch just in case it doesn't turn out right the first time. Hacksaw it off. Sand it flat. Get a brass screw and some valve grinding compound. Chuck it in a drill and have at it.
Buy the tool, do it yourself, post up a "watch this" thread, then sell the tool for 75% of new and get some of your $$ back. Once the TBH brotherhood sees how easy it is, they'll be lining up to fix up that old boomer they have in the closet.

As someone already mentioned, just use a hacksaw to chop the barrel. I went to Advanced Auto Parts and bought valve grinding compound and a set of grinding bits, one of which was an orb. I ordered a cold bluing kit from Midway, which I think was the most expensive thing.
When you go to do the recrowning, first cram a wad of paper towel into the barrel just at the muzzle. This will protect the rifling at the crown from getting worn by the metal shavings and grinding compound as you complete the recrowning.
Also, go to Graybeard Outdoors forums and go to the Handi Rifle forum. Those guys there are just about as friendly and helpful as the folks here. They walked me through the whole process in baby steps and helped with all my questions when I did my 45-70 project.
As for the front sight, I paid to have that done. Just didn't trust myself to get it right with the tools I had at the time.
Thanks for the reply guys, i will be cutting down the barrel over the weekend. it is at 25 inches now and i am going to cut it at 22 and see how she feels then possible go down from there. i will be going no shorter than 20 inches.
