When you say red dot, do you mean a holographic sight? If so Eotech is the way to go.
For holographics, yea EOTech all the way. Sightmark makes a decent one for around $150. Same thing, just not mil spec with aircraft aluminum and all that jazz. Have one on one of my ARs. Fired a ton of rounds with it on and have no issues with it losing zero or anything else. Aimpoint makes a good straight up red dot but they're just as expensive as EOTech. Again, sightmark has a decent red dot for around $80-100. I don't really like red dots, but it's personal preference. If I'm gonna put a sight that needs a battery on one of my ARs it'll be a holographic.
If you've never used a red dot, it'll better for you to get something like a sightmark or BSA or something like that to put on and get used to the feel and everything before you go drop $800 on a red dot or holo
