    Dutch oven fail

    Bought a dutch oven and tried to cook some chicken in it in the big green egg. BURNT the chicken. Now I have a stinky dutch oven sitting out side. I put it directly on the coals and the egg said it was only 250 degrees. Was I not supposed to put the oven on the coals?

    I'd be willing to bet the coals were hotter than the air temp of 250. You can get lids that hold coals and ovens that have legs to keep them off the coals. Clean it, reseason if necessary, and use it again.

      Sorry man. What did you have in the pot with the chicken? Those things can get real hot.

        I thought a Dutch oven is when you farted Under the covers and gave her the ole hold down routine.... I was anxious to see how this one back fired on you..

          Dutch ovens will get too hot directly on the coals. Most folks use trivets to keep the ovens 4-5" above the coals. Doesn't apply to cooking in a BGE, but most folks that are oven cooking outside make the mistake of overloading the coals... especially on top. 50% or less coverage on the top is plenty of heat for the top half of the dish. Keeping fresh coals will help with consistancy.

              Rule of thumb is "2 over 2 under" meaning that depending on the size of the dutch oven, lets say a 10 inch, you would put 12 coals on top and 8 under to get a temperture of 350 degrees. If the oven doesnt have legs I wad up foil into balls about the size of a plum or a lemon and sit the oven on the foil. You need the space so the coals can breathe and have air flow. Hope this helps

                Sorry to hear this I am about to learn how to cook with dutch oven. Don't give up all I have read say's your going to burn at first.

                  I am new to the Dutch Oven. The You Tube video that Coach W posted is great !!
