Assorted bullet weights for load build

    Hello

I am trying to work up a load for my .308. Does anyone like midway or something sell assorted bullet weights or a mix of different bullets to try. I hate to spend $30 on 100 bullets to use 5-10 then never use the rest.

    Thanks
    Brandon

There is a company called Bullet Proof that sells popular brand and weight bullets in a 12pc pack. You do pay a little $10 or so, but it would be close to what you are looking for.

I found the pack in stock at 10 ring. 12pack of 165gr Nosler Accubond. They had Nosler and Barnes bullets in said packs

It was a stock 700 adl, its on a mcmillian stock with dbm.

I think it is 24 in long with a 1 in 10 twist.

The barrel may be replaced soon with a varmint contour shilen 1 in 10 twist barrel.

Well yourbkinda barkin up the wrong tree in order of finding a load. You know you got a 1 in 10 twist.. commonly for that it will shoot sierra 168 -175 gr fine... your powder charge is a bigger variable than the bullet that critiques precision.... you need to go buy a box of these and find the powder charge your barrel likes before playing with bullets...

What kind of powder should i start with? From my understanding varget is one of the best but i have would have better luck finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow then finding Varget. Right now i have plenty of h4895. And there are alot of loads data for this powder in .308.

If you know anyone coming to DFW area I can help out with Varget.

In a 1-10 barrel I would try the 178 AMAX with Varget. I have to push max charge for best accuracy out of my 1-12 twist SPS to get the best groups (sub 1/2 MOA).

It's going to like the heavier bullets. Stay away from anything lighter than 168gr. I would start off with a 175gr. Sierra Match King with 42 grains Varget. Work your load up slow and watch for pressure signs (carbon between primer and primer pocket, flat primer). The OAL of the round will also determine how hot you can load the cartridge. A bullet just kissing the lands or maybe about .030" off will be the most accurate but might not fit in your dbm. Check your OAL, if the round is too long to fit in your dbm, make the round just long enough to fit your dbm and feed smoothly. Increase your powder loads .2 grains until you start to find a sweet spot. It takes lots of testing. Everything from OAL, the type of case, primer, neck-sizing bushing, etc, etc, affects accuracy. You can achieve .5" MOA with this combo if you mess with it enough. 168gr. SMK's are very accurate but are only consistent out to about 600 yards. The 175's will get you out to 1,000 no problem. You can test a lot of different bullets or you can take one that's proven and make it work for your rifle.

BTW, I might not have a clue what I'm talking about, lol.

Thanks for the offer Flyby but i dont have any friends in dfw and have only been once. I will keep a look out around houston for some varget.

Would it be worth it to go ahead and scrap the stock adl barrel and get a varmet contour before wasting time and money for a barrel i may change anyway. I was thinking of getting on the list for a krieger 5r or buy a shilen from midway.

Double check that twist rate. It's not a common twist for 30 cal unless maybe it's a bench gun. Here is a link that will give you the bullet weight and type you need for various uses.

If you have the money to do it, yes. They are far more consistent and accurate. You would be better off in the long run.

Yep dont waste the reloading supplies if your gonna change the barrel.... you dont have to use varget... vargets just popular cuz it works in lots of calibers... I for one do not have a single rifle that has liked varget... be sure to get at least 50 rounds down the barrel before you start to load develope... new barrels need to be shot a few times to hone em in.
