    Marlin 45-70

Picked up a used Marlin 1895 GBL in 45-70 today at Carters Country for $499. It's in great condition, probably 95%. I'm going to the lease this weekend to see about a test fire on a hog or two. I'm pretty sure it will do the job. It's a pretty good upgrade from my 30-30 for a hog gun, I can't hardly wait, 300 grains of hurt going down range. Anybody else shooting a 45-70, it seems like popular caliber these days. Kevin

I have two. A Ruger#3 and a Marlin SS GBL . I have taken a couple of deer and lets just say it works really well.

Very cool man. I envy you. I have been wanting one just for blasting pigs. Please let me know how it turns out for you!

Got a 1895GS with a Leupold M8 2.5x. I shoot 300gr hardcast, but the 45-70 goes waaaaaay heavier if you need to drop something that'll bite back.

Awesome rifle, I've rolled some piggies at 100 yards with open sights. Lots of fun to shoot.

I had one and sold it during hard times. Sure with I had it back. I hand loaded for it. Slung a 300 gr SJH @ 2200fps. Sittin behind that gun off the bench was he!! But it sure put the hurt on anything you shot with it. Mine shot the Remington 300gr factory loads and leverlution ammo good. You got you a good gun that's alot of fun to shoot. Congrats.

I have a 450 Marlin, same gun with a banded cartridge to prevent the higher powered round from chambering in an older 45-70. I've rolled 125 pound pigs in the air with a shoulder shot. Lost a shoulder's meat doing it. Definately not a plinking gun.

I've decided to give it to my son to take back to Montana with him in August for the weapon's original purpose- grizzly bears. He hunts elk and there's always a chance the fish and game do gooders will relocate a problem grizz from Yellowstone there. It's small enough to keep in his truck so he can take it in with a meat pack when he gets an elk.

Bill in SJ, my next lever gun is going to be a 450. Just too pricey right now.

Buddy had one that I worked up some loads using 300-gr Barnes bullets with the large hollow cavity--it was one ham slamming rifle.

I'm going to be selling the Leupold quick release scope mount for a 450 which should fit a 45-70. I had the less expensive Leupold rings and base with my 1" VX1 3-9 and it would not grip the 1" barrel. I send the mount and scope back to them, they sent me the better mount and since my son's needing iron sights for bear defense, I'm putting the 3x9 on my AR and selling the mount.

1 shot is not bad. 2 are OK. When I was at the range the last time to sight it in, at 12 or 13 shots I had to quit with a sweatshirt on since it was getting painful. The range crew behind me were watching me and later said it looked like I was in pain.

350 bullet and power to shoot 2,100+ fps causes a thump.
