    Rem 700 rough action

I have a Remy 700 ADL in 270 and a new model 7 in 260, and the actions are so rough. My other Rems are jeweled bolts from mid to late 90's. is there anything that can be done by me to help smooth it out. These actions just plain ole suck compared to my older 700s. Both these rifles were gifts so guess I shouldnt complain, but a world a of difference from my others. Thanks

Following to hear from those more knowledgable.

The only thing I would think possible is some polishing of the action with compound. With that said the root of the problem is looser tolerances on the parts and polishing only makes that looser.

I pulled out my Remy BDL Custom Deluxe in 17 rem and boy they weren't even close. They don't really machine or polish the bolts anymore. It's sad that quality has deminished but prices still high. I'm starting to lean to my browning rifles instead, just seems quality is better. Smooth action and always a good shooter. Always a Rem guy at heart though.

        How do they shoot??

If they are accurate, then sit on front of the tv and start cycling the bolt. Make sure you pull the bolt and keep locking lugs lubricated with grease to keep them from galling the action.

If they shoot like a scatter gun, then your only real choice is to gunsmith & have them lapped & squared up. (i don't keep guns that are not accurate) Those matt finish actions are worse than others.

Next time you are at the gun shop, ask to see a 700 VS SF model and compare to what you own...they put a little more attn into the upper end models.

Compare a model 70 pre 64 winchester action to the post 64's...they don't make'm like they used to!!

Both are about 1 moa at 100 yds with factory ammo. The 260 has less than 20 rounds down pipe, and 270 about 40 rounds. Both were given to me at no cost brand new. So I guess I can live with it, just being picky I guess.

They just aren't the same as the old ones. You could always lap the bolt lugs with polishing compound and work the action a few hundred times.

Well I could take that 260 off your hand. Just put em back up and take out the micro medallion.

Capt Bryan I have to say that browning is a smooth shooter. It's not even funny how smooth that gun is. But the 260 is staying with me for sure. I killed an audad this weekend with the little model 7 at a range over 200 yards. I was pleased with the performance of the cartridge.

How have you been? I haven't even been to any of my leases due to building the house. 2-3 weeks and hopefully I will be able to move finally. .264 bullets have a great BC I have been researching them a lot and want to build a couple of 260 or some 6.5 wildcat for my wife and I to target practice and hunt with.

They are mass produces and dont have the quality they used to. The upper end remingtons are decent though... they dont put the quality out like they used to.. as much as I hate to say it... savage has really came a long way and is making much more quality bolt guns now. I am partial to how a remington action works over a savage... thats why I buy custom actions and build guns with customs actions blueprinted after a rem 700 action... but as far as off the shelf again I hate to say it but it wouldnt suprise me if a savage shot better than a remington now days.

Captbryan all is well. Glad to hear your house is almost finished. I had a browning 260 once and regret trading to a close friend. This one wont leave my safe. It put a smack down on a west texas audad at a tad over 200 yards. Be safe and let me know If you ever want to move another rifle like the one we traded. It my favorite varmint rig now.

Maybe a dumb question, and certainly not a comment. Why can't you chuck one of the cotton polishing wheels into a dremel and go to town with some very fine jewlers rouge or Flits to polish the offending surfaces?

Not sure if I can without negatively affecting the action. If its possible maybe I will.

Work it too much and you will wind up with excessive headspace.
