IMHO...As with most rifles, it is far more accurate than the person behind the trigger. You can spend all the money in the world on stocks, rings, mounts, scopes, etc. but none of that will materially change the ability of the person pulling the trigger. Practice with what you have until you are consistantly dead on accurate at the disctance you need and only then will the other things make any difference.

If you are going to hunt with the rifle... the animal you kill could care less if your SPS is in a "tacti-cool" McMillan stock or not......
I agree with you to a point. I don't consider myself a great shooter but my custom 257 Wby with a McMillan stock, Kreiger barrel, Jewell trigger, Swarovski scope and custom action will way out shoot my off the shelf 260 Remington with a Nikon scope.

Shooters ability to read and adjust for wind is the biggest aspect of shooting long range accurately. However higher quality parts sure make it easier as well. Otherwise all top bench rest and/or long range shooters would just use off the shelf plain Jane rifles, but they don't.

To the long range precision guys what is a good affordable piece of glass that I can get in Mildot set on 20 moa bases capable of dialing out to 800 yds

As much as I would love to get a Nightforce ext I simply cant afford that any suggestions on makes and models thanks

      Muzzy100

Can I get something good for 400 dollars?? I really would like to stay in that range IF possible on glass but at the same time I don’t want to cripple a nice rifle

your rifle will be only as good/accurate as your glass

kinda like putting $59.00 Walmart brand tires on John Force's NHRA Mustang Funny Car

quality glass with repeatable turrets are a must IMO ..... used scopes in the $700-800 price range can be found

with mirage and inferior glass, you may not be able to see your target

          Blake beat me to it.

IMO a Leupold VX3 LR with custom shop turrets would be the minimum starting point. A Mark 4 would be better.

Also look at the SWFA Super Sniper scopes. You can get into a 10 x 40 HD fixed power very reasonable.

I love my 5r so I would say go with the 5r...I also run a Night force and love the setup.
The scope is going to really help you dial in and I would get the best you can afford. I have a millet on my AR15 and it seems ok but really haven't shot it passed 450 yards.

vx3LR and mark 4s for me. it sucks to spend a ton, but i promise, its worth it. im cheap. if i could get the same performance for half the money i would in a heartbeat as would most others. just doesnt happen

i have tried every model of vortex.... the fanboys here will tell you they are awsome. they suck. plain and simple they suck. i was impressed with the razor, but it isnt cheap.

ive tried nikon.... monarchs are good but far far from ideal

zeiss is good but the features for long range shooting arent there

and idk what mikes setup is on his swaro but they are more of a hunting scope than long range stuff. amazing glass but the turrets and reticles i am not a fan of.

nightforce is overpriced, a mark 4 is better.

best bang for the buck is a leupold vx3lr, send it off for some turrets and a reticle and be done (buy used)

i have never used an swfa scope.

my vote is anything leupold vx3 or higher.

i learned this first hand and it cost me time and $$$$ to figure it out. i was trying to get good for cheap. doesnt happen. youll have to turn the magnafication down so low your target will be tiny.

you can find a used Vari-X III LR Target, or a VXIII LR/T 4.5x14x50mm side focus priced around $550 - 650 depending on reticle and turret options

LEU will install (2) M1 turrets for $129 , and a $150 for a mil-dot or TMR reticle ..... lots of money invested this way which you won't get back in return

my suggestion, camp out on SH classifieds and find a LEU scope that already has M1's and a TMR or MD reticle ..... you'll save many nickles in the long run

LEU MkIV 4.5x14x50 M1/TMR (used) scopes are usually priced around $725-850 depending on condition , and may include a set of $100 rings . New these scopes run around $1100

serious, serious shooters are bypassing the LEU Mk4's and spending $2500-3500 on USO , PR, and S&B glass

                      Mk4

sorry for large pic , you get the idea ... TMR reticle

When I'm looking for a scope (which I am now) I check this site everyday: http://www.samplelist.com/Riflescope...1.aspx#Leupold

That and the classifieds around the interwebs can find you some good deals... I'm currently looking for a vx2-vx3 for a "long range 22lr" 300-400 yards. Variable power that ends in 12-25 power... Just in case you run into something.

I have never found a fault with Leupolds stuff. I highly suggest em.
