"What we're really talking about here is property crime ," Sgt. Robert Wurpes told ABCNews.com. "We don't think firearms are the answer to this problem. However, we do understand gun ownership is a right."
"We understand that it's frustrating when people get things stolen or are victims of crimes," he said. "Our concerns come into play when guns are involved because they're dangerous. "
Guns are dangerous? Everytime you find a person with their head on straight there's another in line with his head up his ***.
Wurpes the wuss. Scared of a little old ladies gun... Guns aren't dangerous... Idiots are dangerous regardless of what they have in their hands...
But it's too early and I haven't finished my coffee yet... So I digress.

As far as the fact that he doesn't think guns are the answer, I guess LE could've prevented this crime or done something to get the poor lady her statue back?

His response from a police department is predictable. While most line officers might feel that people should arm themselves, they aren't going to get in the pulpit and tell everyone to go get guns... and then be blamed for something bad that happens.
The sergeant also makes the statement, "guns can become dangerous when they are in the hands of someone without enough training and experience".
Does anyone dispute this obvious fact? You only have to read personal experiences on this website of people going to school for a CHL and telling horror stories about people qualifying. Remember that these are the people that might run out and get a gun that otherwise would not if the police went public telling everyone that they suggest that they arm themselves.
The police know that anyone that wants to own and carry a firearm will. They know that making a public statement that they aren't recommending it to everyone will not deter anyone that has the right and belief that they need to do so.
Therefore I think that it was a political statement, not a personal belief. This same sergeant might have gone to a local sporting goods store after making the statement and recommended guns for people to get for defense (like I do when I walk in Academy in uniform).

He was sent out to read the bosses message just like Susan Rice was sent out to spin Obama's excuse for the Benghazi attacks. In other words, a talking head and spitting out another person's opinion opinion.

From what the lady sounded like though, she knows her way around a firearm and is promoting others to do the same. Still, like you mentioned, not everyone needs a gun! With the proper training however, most could be responsible and very effective with a firearm.
Either way, hopefully the crimes stop for them and no one gets hurt.
