    AR-15 questions

I'm looking to buy my first AR this weekend and just want opinions on which one I should get? Also what are the best optics for the AR? I've previously hunted hogs with my 30-06 bolt action but I want to take my hunts to the next level! Any commits would be appreciated thanks!

It all depends on how much money you want to spend

Well I'm going to pick one up from the Fort Worth gun show, so it might be a used one but I'm looking to spend around 1200-1500.

for Hogs, I would recommend the 6.8
buy a complete AR, don't piece one together, you can over accessorize it later.

                  Why is that?

You have really opened one up with this

BTW....you might find this thread moved to the "Other side of the ranch" forum. It's the firearm section.

Brand names are better. But other brands work well also.
I have had great experiences with Colt, Stag, Bushmaster and Spikes Tactical. The upper is where accuracy and performance is measured. The 6.8 is great for hogs and the 300 AAC Blackout delivers great performance also. Ammo availability for the 300 is scarce. I don't know about the 6.8, but 5.56 /.223 is available more than the aforementioned. The only downside of the 5.56 is that it is a little light for hogs. But head shots are effective. A flat top upper is desirable for scope mounting. A 1:7 twist is a more universal twist rate for the heavier bullets. Get the rifle and the goodies can come later. Good Luck.

Also the optic set up always depends on the rifle.

I like the 6.5 Grendel. Nothing wrong with the 6.8. But if you reload your ammo the 6.5 has considerably more options available. And give you a good excuse to get a .260 our 6.5 creedmore later. and everyone knows the 6.5mm round is better at distance and just as effective up close.

Optics you will really need to evaluate the situation you intend to use it in. Low light 100+ yard shots or mid day early evening riding in the truck rapid follow up shots or do you want to have a compromise of both.

Low light - you will need to buy good glass with magnification. Zies, luepold, swfa, night force, ect.

Mid day riding in the truck - nothing beats eotech for red dot optics and rapid target shooting

Combination of both - low magnification scope something with 1x and probably a 30mm tube trijicon accupoint is pretty good , or their acog line,

Optics. This is what's on mine and I'm really liking it.

It works good for up close and out there a little ways.

A buddy just bought the vortex sparc. That little dude is AWSOME. the dot is a 2 MOA dot tht is clear. Not fuzzy like most other red dots and its not a busy optic. Just a red dot. Plus comes with a 2x magnifier. I'm lookin into one soon.
