Find what YOU like, will carry, and practice with. Basically everyone on this (and every other forum) is going to tell you to buy what they have. That being said, a lightweight revolver is hard to beat, as are any of the single stack polymer pistols. Stick with a make with a good reputation, load it with quality ammo, and you'll be fine.
