    Muzzleloaders

Can any of you guys give me some input on today's muzzleloaders and what you have liked/disliked about the rifle y'all are using? I just got invited on a muzzleloader hunt for mule deer in New Mexico, and I haven't muzzleloader hunter since college in Michigan. I have an OLD CVA Eclipse Hunter, and I'm thinking of buying something new/used. I've been looking at the T/C Encore, but really am not sure which way to go. Thanks for the help!

IMO is use what ya got it will work. I have shot a Hawkens for yrs and yrs. I also have one of the first Knight rifles. In .50 cal. Shoots good and carries good. 250 gr .451 XTP SABOT. Over 80gr on FFF black powder.

I only have experience with the lower end ones. I bought a TC impact and my buddy got a traditions whitetail hunter, last season. They are both pretty good little guns for the money. However, the breech plug on mine is a pain to clean. Not a big deal, but you have to keep an eye on it so it doesnt clog up. His has a much wider hole for the primer to flash through and isnt that big of a concern. We both bought the guns in kits that only require powder and primers to go hunting. My kit was a little better quality, the sabots and tools were better and mine had a variable power scope as well. I aslo chose to load loose powder instead of pyrodex pellets and I get pretty good accuracy at 100 yds. He uses the pellets and his groups are 2-3 time the size of mine. As far as the Encore, I have only heard good things about them. I hear Knights also make quality muzzleloaders, but they were too expensive for my budget.

I shot a Knight wolverine for years and switched when I found a great deal on a closeout at Wal-mart on a T/C Triumph.

I topped it with a Nikon BDC and have killed several deer, one a 170" @ 168 yards, another a 140" @ 191 yards. I love the triumph.

I am currently running a T/C Omega with thumbhole stock and after market ghost ring rear sight. No real issues with accuracy out to 200 yards.

Just make sure of the laws in NM as some states limit you on bullet choice and scope usage.

Thanks for the input guys! There are so many thing to choose from now a days. I may go with what I have, but if memory serves me right I think I could only throw 90gr of powder in that eclipse hunter I have. I need to check though, but I'd really like to make sure I have a combo that is lethal out to 200yds on a big buck, and I'm not sure if the set up I have will give me that with super great accuracy.
