I love all kinds of rifles, but the rifles that most intrigue me are those rifles with some scratches on the stock. These rifles have stories to tell. What is your go to workhorse? Why did you select the rifle/scope/caliber?
This is mine.
It started life as a tikka t3 varmint in .308 win.
I like heavy barrels on rifles. They hold steady off hand and they can be shot all day on the range. I feel the only downside, more weight to carry, is offset by the benefits of a thicker contour. I think medium heavy barrels are the perfect combination.
I cut the barrel back to be more maneuverable in a stand, truck, moving through brush, or packing into a location.
The .308 round it's self is not exactly a top performer. It does just about everything good but nothing great. However, it does do something extremely well: it holds its performance in short barrels. Infact, cutting the barrel from 24" to 18" only cost me 60 fps in velocity! I think you would be hard pressed to find any round that can perform as well as a 308 out of an 18" barrel that does not have a 308 parent case.
I chose the tikka for a few reasons. I like the 70* bolt throw and remarkably smooth action. I also like its "long action" allowing me to seat the Berger bullets as long as I want to. I just filed back the bolt stop and purchased the "long" magazine and voila!
The scope is a leupold vx-r 3-9x40 CDS. I am very impressed with the vxr line of scopes. They are very clear optically, on par or better than the zeiss conquest line. You can see bullet holes on 3 power at 100 yards!
The illuminated retical makes low light shots much more comfortable. CDS allows me to dial out to well beyond my comfortable range.

This gun will shoot 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups with boring regularity. It has printed a few 1/4 MOA groups in the hands of shooters much better than I, this group is an average group it prints.
Now, what's your go to gun?
