How much $ would I need to become an ammo mfg.?

Anyone with a manufacturing background care to chime in with an estimate of what capital would be needed to start an ammo factory?

Assume we start small, 22LR only, just big enough to get in production?

    Located in Texas, of course.

Not sure but I could use a few thousand rounds of 22LR, at a TBH discount of course.

Millions to be able to compete with existing companies. Automated machines, a space to house them in, primers, brass, bullets, powder, powder storage and safety facilities, staff, utilities, packaging, shipping, inside and outside sales, quality control and so on and so forth.

Good luck, and if and when you make them, I will buy 1K from you.

What he said^^^^ good luck getting started right now as you are going to have a heck of a time right now just finding components to load the ammo, even the big boys are having issues right now keeping up. Plus once all the stupidity calms down how are you going to maintain market share against the big boys, going to be extremely hard to do, unless you are making quality ammo cheaper than they do.

I'm really surprised that we haven't heard about startups jumping in to fill the gap.

Would you be willing to buy 22LR from a completely unproven startup if it was priced reasonably?

Raw material shortages notwithstanding, are we talking $5, 50, or 500 million to get in production. Could it be done small-scale?

Not going to, would take way to much capital and once this slows down it would be a big money loss, because the client base would disappear. Plus I am sure it takes a long time to get all the paper work from the gubberment to make ammo.

Answer: the only way to make it profitable is to be able to make massive quantities in order to spread your capital outlay over a large number of units produced.

To do it small scale, you would have to source everything but final production.

I think just the permitting process alone would take you past the end of the craze.

                        yup.
you think you're going to jump in front of the big boys who buy components by the billions ?

there are a few small ammo makers around, Ts in texas city and Collins in conroe. back in 09 and this cycle both they stopped selling ammo because they couldnt get components.
They have/had the capacity to make millions of rounds a week and they couldnt compete for components.

The government red tape would be enough to make you sick. Plus it would cost a lot to get it done.

But if you get it done I am in for 5k rounds of 22lr

There was a small company called "Houston Cartridge Company" that would be a good example of what a small ammo company would be like. Unfortunately no idea as to what happened to them.
