    Question about Savage rifles

I am looking into purchasing a rifle from a local collection. I have not seen the rifle, nor any pictures yet, but here's the information I have so far. It's a Savage model 112 in 300 Win Mag, fluted stainless barrel, composite stock. I've searched the web and can't find a model 112 in 300 Winmag. I've found 111, 114, 116 etc, but not a 112, and when I limit the search down to stainless steel, the list is limited further to only the 114 and 116 models. Now, as I understand it, the 112 series (from looking at savage's website) are the Varmint/Target series rifles, so I'm assuming it will have a heavy barrel, but what else about the 112 makes it different than a standard 110. I know they all share the same 110 action, but there has to be some difference between the 110, 111, 112, 114, 116 etc. I know the value will depend on what exact model it is, BVSS, FCV etc, but I just can't find any listings for a model 112 in 300 WM.

What can the brain trust tell me about the Savage 112 in 300 Win Mag aside from the standard "Savages are very accurate." etc?

All I can offer is I have a 24" stainless fluted savage .308 varmint that is a made for Cabela's rifle - as in it doesn't exist in savage's catalog for the year I bought it -yet I resides in my gun case.
You might have found a specialty gun made for a run requested by a distributor.

Looks like they made a model 112 but don't make the 300 win any more. Savage usually names their short actions a 10,12,14,16, and longs have the 1 in front of them. To me it appears to be the exact same thing as a model 12, just the long action.

I have a model 12 in 300wsm that is a 26" stainless fluted heavy barrel. It will shoot lights out all day long. I had the confidence to take a deer at 406 yds this year and it did its part.

Buy a 112BVSS Long Range 300 Win Mag 112BVSS Long Range 300 Win Mag NIB, Factory New & unfired Savage MODEL 112BVSS - 12 Series Varmint in .300 Winchester Magnum cal. w for sale by S Harris on GunsAmerica.com the best online marketplace for buying and selling semi auto pistols, firearms, accessories, and collectibles : 976729958

There were several pictures of them online so it was definately made at one time. I bet it is a tack driver.

Usually the diff between them is the stock. Accustock and also the trigger. Depending on the age of the gun it may not have the accutrigger. Some differ on the barrels but obviously the one you are looking at has the heavy barrel.

Thanks guys. I finally got a picture of said rifle. I'm thinking it's a frankengun. According to a couple of articles I found, Savage didn't add the long action 112 to the model 12 line until 2006, which I think was after the accutrigger came out. This gun doesn't have the acccutrigger on it. It also has a stainless bolt and barrel, but a blued action, and I don't think I've ever seen a factory rifle with that configuration, many customs, but not factory. Here's what I'm thinking: Somebody had a long action savage 110, then went out and bought a 112 take off barrel in 300 winmag and threaded it onto the action they already had. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as I know Savages are easy to do that with, but not knowing who did the work, I wouldn't know if it was headspaced properly, or any other work that might have been done to it. The stock is not a pretty laminate, nor a quality synthetic, it's a cheap injection molded tupperware stock. I'm still not totally convinced I don't want it, but my offer just went down. We'll see what happens, but I have a couple weeks before I make a final decision. What do you all think?

You are probably right. If it was all stainless it would have been a 112 FVSS which was a model they offered in .300 win mag. It would have had a stainless action though.

Also keep in mind a couple of things. Savage made and makes lots of special run stuff for different distributors and for large retailers. If you'll make an order for enough guns they will make you whatever you want. Second, they continued to make non-accutrigger models after the accutrigger came out.

You may be able to call Savage with the serial number and find out what it was originally. Chances are high someone replaced the original blued barrel with a stainless barrel.

Can you get the serial # and call savage? They should be able to tell you something. Could have been something out of their custom shop.

It would have to be a 111 action for the shank and bolt face diameters. That said, i have seen pics of guns just like this today, fluted and all. I think its a legit considering, the stock sounds like a factoy savage stock and trigger. Its all pre accu trigger, and i dont think youd go wrong with it.

Thanks for that information. What exactly is the difference between a 110 and a 111.....112 etc?
