I have heard multiple answers from as many people. some answers were 3, 4, 5, and 7 yrs between renewals and these were all Texas holders. What gives? what about me being in the military and if I'm deployed or PCS'd some where. How would that work?

4 years but depending on when you get it in relation to your birthday it could be close to 5 on your first renewal. 4 after that.
Mine is up in January so I will start the process mid July as you can submit as much as 6 months early. If you wait more than a year you will have to reapply and until a new ID is issued don't carry...Comment

GC ยง411.183. EXPIRATION. (a) A license issued under this subchapter expires on the first birthday of the license holder occurring after the fourth anniversary of the date of issuance.
(b) A renewed license expires on the license holder's birth date, five years after the date of the expiration of the previous license.Comment
