I finally got my license in the mail. What's your daily routine for clearing your weapon when coming home? I know most of you don't have to worry about this. I have 3 small kids at home and want to be as safe as possible. I know education is the first step and have already started that on my oldest. What other safety steps do you have? I want a repeatable process that I do every time I come home. Anyone use a small handgun safe for temp storage? Im big on gun safety already. Just looking for ideas that maybe I haven't thought of or an opportunity to learn something new. My kids are the world to me and I couldn't live with myself if an accident were to happen. You can never be too prepared!

I have to agree with those that have suggested getting a safe. I don't have small kids at home anymore. If I did I would be leery of having to unload on a daily basis...just not that smart IMO. Maybe some of those guys in law enforcement can shed a better light on how they handle their firearms as I'm sure many have little ones at home. I applaud you for thinking it through and being proactive about it.

Most guns locked in a gun safe and 1 in a small bio safe for easy access to only you and the misses. Everyone should have at least 1 gun in a fairly resonably accessible place...
I don't have small children any more so my gun is on me or very close at all times. It won't do much good during a breakin if I have to unlock it. I'm within 12" of my Glock as we speak...

I have a trigger lock on mine. Get home, eject mag and round, reinsert mag, put trigger lock on. Gun then goes in a drawer. I have the key to the lock hidden close by. I have tested to see how fast I can get the gun ready. It takes about 15 sec. from start moving to in hands and ready. My son is 14 and is well educated on gun safety. The lock is more for when he has friends come over. I have no idea what their knowledge is.
