AR advice, help for deployed army brother.

    Hello
My step brother who is on his second tour in afghanistan sent me a an email requesting i get him an AR. He wants a piston driven AR, i want advice on what is the best to get him.
I have a contact that can get me a ruger sr556 for less than msrp. And another contact that can get me the best AR that Academy offers but then i will need to convert it. What is the best route, i know nothing about the ruger AR's. if i have to buy a regular gas tube AR and have to convert it what is the best conversion kit.

My brother wants to stay under $2,500.

Thanks for the help, he will appreciate it. Plus i get to shoot it until he gets back states side ;-)

Between those two choices I'd get the Ruger. As for the best rifle for $2,500 or less......that's a hard question. You could spend hours looking at the higher end rifles and it pretty much just comes down to which one you like the best.

I have the Ruger 556E and it a sweet shooting gun. Just came from the range and I already want to go back. Also do not convert a rifle if you want a piston start with a piston
